The Pena Palace (Portuguese: Palácio da Pena) is a Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.
The castle's history started in the Middle Ages when a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena was built on the top of the hill above Sintra. According to tradition, construction occurred after an apparition of the Virgin Mary.
Loved the park - got there for 10am and loads of parking spaces. Was worried after reading reviews against driving there and parked at lake entrance to walk through park. Why Not seeing as we paid to see the park anyway. Gorgeous. Palace is not worth it... the crowds made it worse. You see all you need to with the garden pass! You get up close to the palace.

Great place to visit when in Sintra. 👌Although we could not go to the castle but we managed to walk around the entrance and park. Its a lovely place in touch with nature with long unwinding roads and natural beauty all around. The weather was beautiful. The place is neat and clean and very well maintained. Kids will enjoy here. Overall a wonderful experience along with breath taking views of the hills and valleys.👌👍

Simply breathtaking. The palace is tucked away within the trees, so it seems to appear suddenly from the trees. It was quite foggy when we visited as well, which only added to the magical sight. The interior is organized with displays and explanations for each room (in English and Portuguese). Beautiful lighting lends to quality photos. I would advise that you get here as early as you can because you can really get lost (in a good way) in all the corridors, but they do close the doors at 5pm. One of my fave palaces in Portugal!

A true gem of Portugal. This world heritage site is simply a must-visit for every itinerary. Beautiful facade, intricate interiors and extremely helpful staff. The views from the top are simply breathtaking. You'll not find many similar experiences in the world. Make sure your camera has plenty of battery when you arrive. Plan to spend some time walking around the grounds, visiting the outlying buildings and gardens. The palace has a café and a restaurant so don't feel anxious about hungry kids while touring. Also, plan to spend plenty of time in the museum shop as you'll be enticed by the wide variety of local products and beautiful souvenirs.

This castle is a gem and different from every building you visited before. It’s eccentric, dreamlike, full of history and surprising. The view from the hills is incredible and the architecture is stunning, diverse and very detailed; many rooms will wow you, so will the colorful outsides. I wouldn’t recommend to walk up to the palace from the city center though! We tried at first but the road is very long and not made for pedestrians (take one of the taxi or shuttle you’ll find on the road). Nevertheless, once you arrived at the entrance, if you can and if the weather’s good, don’t take the bus to go through the park. The palace is not too far anymore and the stroll itself is very pleasant.

Recommended visit even though the tour inside the castle is not the best. You have the opportunity to get to see how the palace looked inside but most of the elements were not the original ones since they were robbed. Is better to go early before 10am to avoid the long line to get inside. When you buy the tickets you have the option to get the transportation ticket for 3 euro. I recommend to walk and not to buy it (if you are in conditions to walk and get through small ladders) since is very near and you can save money walking 10 minutes.

Like many other visitors commented, this place is unique and full of photo opportunities. Especially on a fine sunny day, the color contrast between blue sky and red/yellow/purple walls is striking. We enjoyed the castle, but we really enjoyed the outside of the castle. After visiting the castle, try strolling around the park via a mild downhill path from the castle to "the Valley of Lake" entrance, instead of going back to the main entrance. The path is refreshing and has some cool corners worth a few more photo shots along with it. And it's easier to catch a bus or other transportation at this side of entrance than at the main entrance.

We visited this castle in the rain and fog and it seemed to only add to the mystical atmosphere. Very well kept, fun and twisting paths. Very easy to get to castle with well marked paths. Gift shop is varied and the cafe offers enough snacks at decent prices.

This is really a wonderful and fairy tale-like castle. Unlike common castle one can find in Europe, Palace of Pena is so colorful that it is kind of unreal. If you are willing to spend an hour or more to climb up to the mountain to the south of the park, Cruz Alta to be precise, you can see the whole castle from a distance. That view is unforgettable. Truly breathtaking! Totally recommended!

The palace is neat, but you do have to think of it as a former residential palace and not a castle, which it is not. The design is really fun inside and out! It is a very busy tourist attraction and the tour is crowded. The botanical garden (or modern arboretum) is vast and amazing! You could get lost in there and it's away from the crowds, but be ready to hike!

There are a bunch of different tickets. One is a decision between only going to the park or also to the castle. Best tip: just get the park ticket. If you have seen old castles elsewhere then you get the idea and can save some money. If you get a park ticket, you'll still be able to go to the castle and all around it (you just won't be able to go inside the castle). The park, and the outside of the castle is amazing tho. Isn't worth paying the ticket to go inside tho.

This is a castle on steroids! Most castles are empty and incomplete. Rarely do they have any semblance of being usable and yet Pena Palace really let's you see and feel how royalty lived. The views are beautiful and are only eclipsed by the amazing architecture. Best advice is to show up just before they open or be prepared to wait. It took us 1 hour to see everything up close and as we were leaving there were over a hundred people in line waiting to enter.

WOW!! What a Beautiful castle. A must visit if you are traveling to Lisbon. There are several castle in Sintra, this is definitely the nicest one. Few things to note: It’s quite a hike from the train station, but if you are up for it you will have a lovely time exploring and walking up the mountain. Otherwise you can get a bus ride which was I believe €5 There is also a bit of uphill from the ticket office to the entrance of the main castle. But they do have mini bus to take you up there. You can ask for it at the ticket office. Also there are different kind of tickets for the castle. Such as one for just the garden. Another is entrance to everywhere.

Incredibly overpriced attraction. The park is pretty nice and the outside view of the palace is beautiful, but the inside is utterly unvisitable due to the amount of visitors. There are so many people that you have to wait in line for the entire visit. It took us at least three times as long to see everything as it would have taken us if we had been on our own. Aside from the insufferable amount of visitors, there isn't really a lot to see. The inside of the palace is below average compared to other places or castles I've visited before. All in all, a really disappointed visit for way too much money. You may visit the park if you like, but spare yourself the visit of the palace. I'd recommend other attractions like the Quinta da Regaleira over this one.

Such a magnificent king's palace with rich and vibrant colors on its wall as well detailed interiors built on a high mountain. It's a must see when visiting Lisbon. Road to this palace is pretty narrow, so be more alert while driving on this path. Many prefer to take shuttle. It has a restaurant on sight so if you need to refuel after long walk of the palace.
