Saint George's Castle (Portuguese: Castelo de São Jorge; Portuguese pronunciation: [kɐʃˈtɛlu dɨ sɐ̃w̃ ˈʒɔɾʒ(ɨ)]) is a historic castle in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, located in the freguesia of Santa Maria Maior. Human occupation of the castle hill dates to at least the 8th century BC while the first fortifications built date from the 1st century BC. The hill on which Saint George's Castle stands has played an important part in the history of Lisbon, having served as the location of fortifications occupied successively by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors, before its conquest by the Portuguese in the 1147 Siege of Lisbon. Since the 12th century, the castle has variously served as a royal palace, a military barracks, home of the Torre do Tombo National Archive, and now as a national monument and museum.
Although the first fortifications on this hilltop date from the 1st century BC, archaeological excavations have identified a human presence in the Tagus valley as far back as the 8th century BC. The first fortification was, presumably, erected in 48 BC, when Lisbon was classified as a Roman municipality.
Fun day at the castle! Be sure to visit if you are in the city! If you feel adventurous you can actually walk from the Square, about 20 minutes! Or take uber, cheaper than a taxi. You can also just get a ticket for sightseeing bus (castle line). We had a great time! Bring good walking shoes if you plan to go up on the towers!

Beautiful area, breathtaking views. Little streets everywhere filled with cafes, bakeries, and Mom and Pop restaurants. The walls are adorned with beautiful graffiti and drawings. A place of culture. Highly recommended. One of the best places in Lisbon to be.

Amazing views of Lisbon - nice walk to it and around the castle. I just wish there were better descriptions of what we are seeing. An audio guide to listen to while walking at your own pace would have been great.

Possibly the best view of Lisbon is from the ramparts of this castle. I sat and listened to a musician play guitar using the walls like a natural amphitheater to amplify the sound. It only added to the experience. I’m very glad I decided to climb all the way to the top.

I enjoyed a nice walk through the medieval castle and park. Only the walls of the castle remain (you cannot go indoors). There is a nice view of Lisbon from here. In summer, you can probably enjoy a good drink on the stone benches and tables. However, in March, nobody was serving any drinks. There is a small souvenir shop inside.

The castle provides a great view of the city. The battlements are almost all accessible but beware they aren't well guard railed and the steps can be very steep so take care. The iron age section is on accessible via guided tour so take not of tour times when you get there and plan your route so you can join one.

Beautiful and fascinating historical site. There is a reasonably priced café on site for a quick lunch or coffee break. Access is somewhat difficult, steep streets and stepped areas to climb before reaching the site so transport would be necessary for anybody with mobility issues. I would advise a visit to the on site museum to obtain a map of the site in order to make the most of your visit as I was not offered one when I bought my ticket.

What can I say!!! Spectacular views of Lisbon and the castle 🏰 is lovely to visit. Bring a packed lunch to enjoy the day even though there is an outdoor wine 🍷 / champagne bar and a few coffee ☕ shops, there's nothing like a packed lunch watching the world 🌍 go by for the day :) Beware of the queues so go early and spend the day there :)

Well worth the climb up the hill. The fort is immaculately well kept and the views are amazing. The peacocks were an unexpected but happy surprise. If you plot your path carefully you can catch two public elevators from ground level

Amazing castle, a bit of a challenge walking up, but definitely worth it. The queue to get in was fairly quick, €8.50 entrance to access the grounds, including the castle, gardens, museum and archaeological site. The outer wall view overlooking the city is breathtaking, from the view of the river to the pastel coloured buildings below. One of the best aspects of walking these grounds is coming across the beautiful Peacocks that reside here, roaming the castle freely. There are also many cats, especially near the cafe. The Castle itself is a little dangerous to climb up as the inner barriers at the first level is only around 3 feet high. But the views from the top of the castle is amazing. I highly recommend you visit this castle, it's full of history and beauty.

A must see in Lisbon! , One of the best castle I have ever visited. The ticket is 8.50 pp and it really worths. You would have an incredible view over the Lisbon, very ancient places to visit and some peacocks to fascinate you ! The toilets are free. The restaurant and bar has a good quality and nice staff but a bit expensive in comparison with nearby ones.
Soheil JafariApr 12, 2018
Stunning views. 8.50 for adults, 5 for elderly and students (with ID). Recommend going an hour or 2 before sunset as the views and lighting are spectacular. Castle is nothing very special, mainly ruins but fun to climb around. And lots of peacocks roaming around which is cool.

Outstanding all-around views of Lisbon. The castle is interesting too. But be sure to pick up a brochure after you buy your ticket because there is little explanatory signage on site. Best part: Wine With A View, a wine cart where you can order a glass of Portuguese wine and then go sip and savor the view. Can you imagine that at an historical site in the puritan United States?

Really interesting. I spent much longer than I anticipated. Definitely worth seeing to appreciate the history of Lisbon. Walked down after. Very nice historical site. Plenty of restrooms and shade to relax is or take necessary breaks. Cafe on site in case you need a snack or refreshing drink. Beautiful views.

Incredible history surrounding the castle, every area had an information plaque nearby. Outstanding views of Lisbon. Lots of pretty peacocks roaming around taking all the attention! Wear comfortable shoes of course.. lots of walking required.

Offers the best viewpoint overlooking Lisbon. We took the walk up as the queue for the tram was just too long to wait in the sun and it only took 15 minutes to reach the castle entrance. The views from the castle walls are fantastic and there are places to get food and drinks dotted around. Don't worry about booking tickets as the queue moves very quickly and you can grab a guide book / map from the ticket office. (Make sure you look out for the peacocks!!)

It is a nice and clean castle! We just entered the castle because we wanted to have the view to take some nice photographs. We started out wandering around the castle trying to get a view without buying tickets, but the complete top of that specific hill are occupied by the castle grounds, so there was no chance of us snapping a nice shot. So we did buy 2x tickets which came to 18€ together, which I found a bit expensive just to take a few photos. The castle itself is super clean and very nice to see. Just remember that the actual castle is not that old, as it has been rebuild, so it is not really that genuine. Most people go there for the views though, as they are stunning. There is restaurants and toilets in that place as well, so you can spend some good quality time there.
Jeremy GreysmarkJul 8, 2018
Long ques to get in but they moved fast. £7.50 each. Once inside the castle was spacious and easy to move around. Stunning views of the city. Not disability friendly as like most of Lisbon, there are lose floor tiles everywhere and it's easy to trip up. Archaeological section is only open at certain times of the day. No information about the castle on site such as boards or leaflets. The castle is well kept has toilets, a shop, ice cream sales and a restaurant. We didn't have a meal but I imagine the location is pretty at night.

Absolutely gorgeous and steeped in history. It was incredible to see the castle itself and it also a treat to see all the views from the top of the walls. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Lisbon! (We took a hills tram tour that dropped off about 2 blocks away to get there)
