The Autry Museum of the American West is a museum in Los Angeles, California, dedicated to exploring an inclusive history of the American West. Founded in 1988, the museum presents a wide range of exhibitions and public programs, including lectures, film, theater, festivals, family events, and music, and performs scholarship, research, and educational outreach. It has two sites and attracts about 150,000 visitors annually.
In 2013, it extensively redesigned and renovated the Irene Helen Jones Parks Gallery of Art and the Gamble Firearms Gallery in its main building. In its related opening exhibit for the Parks Gallery, Art of the West, the new organization enabled material to be presented in relation to themes rather than chronology, and paintings were shown next to crafts, photography, video and other elements in new relationships.
I've never been a fan of cowboy movies or the Wild West. I had no idea who Gene Autry was. I had very low expectations for this museum. It turned out to be an amazing experience for my whole family. We took a tour with a fantastic, knowledgeable guide, which highlighted the complex (generally racist) relationship the American West had with Native Americans. The museum includes world class art and there was even a section devoted to protests of the Dakota pipeline! How cool is it that a major Museum has an exhibit on a current political issue?

One of the best museums in the US. The text panels show how carefully-researched each exhibition is. There is a lot of variety in the artifacts on display. The facility is well-designed, accessible, spacious and clean. The staff is knowledgable and friendly. The perspective here is inclusive and respectful to the many points of view of various players in the creation of the idea and reality of the “American West.” The exhibitions do not shy away from tough topics. And the graphics and displays help teach more than just basic cowboy history; details on the economics of being a cowboy and what their daily life on the trail was like are included. This is an outstanding place to visit that gives a great introduction to the unique culture of California. Do not pass up a chance to visit! This is a great place to take your family or just visit on your own. Entry prices are reasonable but there are many special discounts to take advantage of. We went on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and it was free admission! No charge for parking. Rental bike station at the entrance. And no charge for temporary or special exhibitions.

A gem of a museum. They have wonderful summer fairs. This is a special place. Free parking - right across the street from the zoo. There revolving exhibits tend to be very interesting playful and offers a unique perspective. I loved their exhibition on play as the miniature hand woven baskets. There were some you needed a magnifying glass to see. They were so delicate and beautiful. I do miss the Lisa See exhibit. I wish they would bring that back.

The Play exhibition seem out of context for the museum, must be the gene influence or some motive to bring families in? I've seen better nostalgia toys and stuff in small towns across this beautiful state. This was really lacking, but they tried. The place is kinda like the twilight zone and so are some of the people working there. Can't wait for the r. Masters of the American West show. Just kidding!

Great museum with plenty for everyone. Came here to see their PST: LA/LA exhibit and it was touching and informative. Their Playtime exhibit was very nostalgic and great fun for kids as well. But really, their permanent collections are worth visiting on their own: they have beautiful paintings of the west, the history of different groups' movement to the west, western entertainers memorabilia, culture of Native Americans, native plants garden, and live music the day I was there---what more could you want?! If you have Bank of America you get free admission during the first weekend of the month as part of BoA's Museums on Us program.

One can’t go wrong visiting fabulous Cowboy memorabilia at the Autry Museum. Kids from 5 to 105 will enjoy a different prospective of American Culture which to date continue to awe! Present & Future Frontiers Man, Women, Boys, & Girls.

It was my first time visiting this museum and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised there was more than just Gene Autry memorabilia. They had wonderful displays of native american art and clothing. The baskets are quite amazing what skill and patience to be able to craft something like that. The La Raza photo exhibit was very moving and very well documented. It's a little pricey for a museum, $14 for adults but they offer senior, veteran and student discounts so it wasn't too bad. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours with the family.

I went here for the first time last week. The Autry Museum is one of Los Angeles most hidden in plain sight treasures. I have been to the LA Zoo many times but never right across the street to the Autry Museum. The best exhibit at the museum is the old west saloon and gun and badge collection. It was awesome.

A not to be missed SoCal attraction. The Western and cowboy experience is spot on if a little on the nostalgic side. The art is world class and if the kids get restless there is also the the LA Zoo across the road.

I think the name belies the true nature of this wonderful museum. Once you get in the doors though it's made clear that this museum was founded by Gene Autry and dedicated to his love of the west. And the definition of "The West" is diverse, historic, and thorough, as it should be. There's a permanent installation of old west historic items along with constantly updating contemporary exhibits about life in the west today from all walks of life. It's a cliche but I'd argue there's something for everyone here.

Great inexpensive activity, wonderful displays and exhibits. Took a little over 3hrs to appreciate most of the exhibits, and that time went by quickly without notice. Wonderful place for everyone of all ages to enjoy. As a student, I was able to gather first hand resourced information useful for my report. Thank you Gene Autry Museum for a very enjoyable and educational experience. Wipl come again, except that this time I'll bring my grandkids.

This is a great museum with so much yo offer and explore. They did a great job with all of the various exhibits. Provides a wide range of History. Takes a few hours to get through the museum. Definitely does not take up the entire day , you can plan on half a day here. Would love to revisit this place again. If you like museums, it is a must visit.

Awesome showcase of the American West. A medium-sized, manageable, airy museum that includes plenty of spots to sit and take it all in. Don’t miss the stagecoach, vast collection of revolvers, or the full scale original saloon. Afterwards, stroll to the beautiful garden (located within the museum) for a bit of solitude next to the mini waterfall. Allow yourself 2-3 hours to fully appreciate this gem of a museum.

Autry routinely has interesting and thought provoking special exhibits. The traditional Gene Autry memorabilia, enhanced by lots more cowboy stuff is fun for kids and adults alike. Easy parking and a friendly staff makes it a great destination for a short or longer visit.

My favorite museum in Los Angeles! The programming is a wonderful mix of intellectual and popular culture exhibitions of the American frontier and what it has meant to our culture. The food at Crossroads Restaurant is so good that I often take my work day lunch break there with a walk in Griffith Park afterwards. The western movie events and western music sing-alongs are especially fun. Of course, it's family-friendly!
