The Lion Monument (German: Löwendenkmal), or the Lion of Lucerne, is a rock relief in Lucerne, Switzerland, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. It is one of the most famous monuments in Switzerland, visited annually by about 1.4 million tourists. In 2006, it was placed under Swiss monument protection.
Mark Twain praised the sculpture of a mortally wounded lion as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world."

This is a quiet and beautiful place to hang out in the evening. Walkable from the Luzern Bridge and It's close to some Swiss chocolate shops. Free entry. Has a monument of a dying lion and it looks beautiful. Not so crowded and it's worth visit one time. I loved this place and would recommend!

Beautiful and grande! Much larger than you would think. A peaceful area to sit or take pictures. There is an additional area to the left you pay for a tour.

One of the best stone carving you’ll ever see. It’s magnificent the work done by the artist. Something to remember the brave soldiers that fought and died.

We came here at night, which turned out to be a nice time actually. It has some nice lights and shadows at night, plus there's less people at this time. It's quite large and beautiful. I'm not surprised Mark Twain was a big fan.

Majestic work! Do not miss on this or underestimate from the pictures! This is truly surreal artwork. Touching background story. Soothing ambiance with little park around. Cute, souvenir shops not far away.

Nice quiet neighborhood with benches to sit and reflect as you watch the carved lion. And grate place to people watch. Peaceful and quiet environment during our visit in March. There is a small circle lake in front of the wall where the lion is carveed. Trreand garden all around the lake making it pleasant place to sit and relax.

A peaceful location, especially at night. You can feel the sadness and mystery that inspired many, and as a Mark Twain fan, I felt the connection. We enjoyed our last thoughtful night sitting on the bench across from the monument, discussing life with international friends. Wonderful spot.

A very nice monument to visit. And you can take some nice selfies. Be careful though, sometimes there's loads of people there due to tours. Worth seeing

Beautiful monument in town. Glacier museum is worth while as well. There is plenty of parking in the garage across the street.

I am from India and I Have seen lot of carvings in the stone, but, this one is different and impressive. Once you know the story behind it it makes it even more interesting. The monument is not far from the lake and the Chapel Bridge. One can easily cover all three walking around.

Not something you stare at all day. It is a beautiful monument that grabs ahold of for a few minutes. After that, get a photo with yourself in it and move onto your next attraction.

The lion's face is very touching. One can really feel the suffering and mourning it had during its last breaths. However, this spot is a must-visit for all tourist groups coming to Luzern. The area can be very crowded (including the free public toilet). You have to be patient until it's quiet enough to feel the touch of the monument.

A beautiful monument with a beautifully maintained park area around it. It can be quite busy so think about coming early or late if you don't like crowds. This is one of the coolest free attractions in Lucerne so definitely check it out!

Ok. This place is good for photo stop. You can look the lion statue, is a amazing statue. There are restaurant and souvenir shop near this monument. I think this place is good for photo shoot only, and maybe you can feel the history too. But for me, 15 minutes is enough for anything, nothing more than that.

Excellent monument and a must visit place for any tourist to Lucerne. The facial expressions of the lion are do very well crafted that you can see it's pain. In the complex right next to it, you have Glacier garden and mirror maze that are worth a visit
