The Musée Gadagne is a museum located in the center of the Vieux Lyon, in the Saint-Jean quarter, in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon. It is composed of the Musée d'Histoire de Lyon (Museum of Lyon History) and the Musée des Marionnettes du monde (World Puppet Museum). The building was classified as a historic monument in 1920. It was acquired by the city of Lyon between 1902 and 1941. After it was determined to be in need of repair, the museum closed in 1998 for more than ten years for renovation and expansion. It was re-opened on 12 June 2009.
The museum is located in the Hôtel Gadagne, a building constructed in the early sixteenth century by the brothers Pierrevive (from 1511–1527). It was redesigned by the Gadagne (or Gadagni) brothers in 1545. This rich Florentine family lived in Lyon in the early fifteenth century. The brothers had many disagreements, and as a result, they stayed in two different parts of the hotel. At the time, their large fortune inspired a saying in Lyon: "riche comme Gadagne" ("rich as Gadagne"). At one time, one of the brothers, Thomas I de Gadagne (known as Thomas the Rich), paid part of the ransom to Louise of Savoy for the release of King Francis I, a prisoner of the Spaniards after the battle of Pavia in 1525.

It's a nice museum. I learnt about the city plan and the change of Lyon. It is informative, but they only provide description in French. The museum is located in Rue de Beouf so you can get to see the old buildings :)

The staff was helpful and friendly. The museum is a large, but unremarkable collection of historical artifacts of Lyon. The puppetry annex of the museum was pretty poor. The first display was probably the highlight, allowing guests to try out some puppetry for themselves. As a professional puppeteer myself, I'd have liked to seen a lot more interaction, history and variation. I am rating three stars only because the museum is large and for a good staff.

There are 2 parts in this museum: 1. History of Lyon; 2. Puppets. 1. History of Lyon. Guided group tour was pretty dry and boring. Nothing much to see in the museum. 2. The puppet area was kinda scary actually. Overall, not a very pleasant experience.

Located right in the middle of Vieux Lyon. Has got 30 rooms and each room stacked with a lot of articles from medieval collections to Renaissance. Prepare to spend an hour or more

Very rich collection of Lyon's history, presented perfectly in this typical old building!

Love this museum. You give this museum one to two hours, it tells you the history of Lyon for the past five hundred years. To the point audio, easy to use, never boring.
