Casa del Mandarino
La Casa del Mandarino (in portoghese: Casa do Mandarim; in cinese: é„家大屋) è un complesso residenziale storico di Macao. L'edificio fa parte del centro storico di Macao, inserito nella lista del patrimonio dell'umanità dell'UNESCO.
La residenza, costruita nel 1869 (nell'ottavo anno del regno dell'imperatore Tongzhi), apparteneva al teorico riformatore della dinastia Qing Zheng Guanying (1842-1921), il quale completò nella casa di Macao la sua opera più importante "Shengshi Weiyan" ("Avvertenze in Tempo di Prosperità ). La particolarità della struttura è che occupa 4.000 m² di superficie; la più grande casa famigliare di tutta la città . In seguito la casa venne pian piano allargata sia dallo stesso Zheng che da suo fratello. Lo stile seguito dagli architetti fu quello cantonese, anche se vennero inseriti alcuni dettagli architettonici derivati dallo stile occidentale.
Tra il 1950 e il 1960 la famiglia Guanying si trasferì lontano da Macao e la casa fu affittata. All'interno della struttura gli inquilini arrivarono ad essere circa 300 in povere condizioni di vita, causando alla struttura un certo tipo di degrado. Proprio in questo periodo la casa fu gravemente danneggiata da un incendio e i lavori di ristrutturazione durarono 8 anni. Il recupero della casa fu completo quando nel 2001 il governo della Regione Amministrativa Speciale di Macao ne acquisì la proprietà .

Fun and free. The house is very cool. I hope the restore the exterior at some point. Shame to see the building degrade. Gift shop is great. Reasonable prices and some unique gifts.
Nice and free historical building. Gift shop is highly recommended. The lady there spoke perfect English and was eager to explain every thing on sale, all the way down to symbolics and characters.

This "home complex" is almost 150 years old and covers almost 1 acre!!! The government's restoration was very Professionally/ skilfully carried out. The home belonged to a famous Chinese writer and theoretician, whose works also influenced China's opening to trade "with the West"!! The home covers 2 floors and provides a "window" into Macau's interesting Historical past/character (before "gaming" exerted its influence)... This is a very worthwhile place to visit!!!
The Mandarin House is one of the more impressive UNESCO World Heritage attractions in the Historic Centre of Macau. I enjoy visiting here during Chinese New Year (CNY), finding it particularly well decorated and festive at this time of year. In short, it is one of my favourite places to visit during the holiday season. Located along Rua Padre Antonio, you will find the Mandarin House across from tiny Lilau Square. During the holiday season, the complex is decorated with many hanging red lanterns, orange mandarin shrubs, cherry blossom trees and other holiday decoration throughout. You will find it in the courtyard as well as within the many rooms of the Mandarin House. Another thing that I enjoy about visits during CNY are the performances held here. We watched a lion dance at Mandarin House yesterday that was quite nice. Unlike the huge crowds which gather at Senado Square and outside A-Ma Temple, there are far few people visiting here for the CNY events and performances. This means you can get up close and take much nicer pictures with the lion dancers and their costumes. Note: Refer to the MGTO What's On Guide for a schedule of Chinese New Year activities in order to find the right dates and times for CNY activity at Mandarin House if you intend to visit during this time of year.
