The History and Ethnography Museum (Malay: Muzium Sejarah dan Ethnografi) is a museum in Malacca City, Malacca, Malaysia. It is located inside the Stadthuys building, built during the Dutch Malacca administration period in 1886. The historical section of the museum displays the history of Malacca from its establishment in 1400 until 1957, the year Malaya gained independence, while the ethnography section of the museum portrays the lifestyle and culture of various communities and sub-communities of Malacca including the Malays, the Chinese, the Indians, the Portuguese, the Baba and Nyonya, the Chetti and Chitty communities. Other exhibits include items used in traditional wedding ceremonies, kitchen utensils, musical instruments and collections of ancient porcelain ware, weapons, stamps and ancient currencies.

Complete place to know and discover the history of Melacca city. Used to be like a parliament house (Stadthuis) since the Dutch till the Malay rule. Several museums is in this building, ethnography, education, arts, cheng ho museum etc. Spent about 1-1.5hrs here. Climb more and you'll find the governor's house on the hill next to st. Paul's hill. Admission fee for non malaysian is RM10 for adult. Worth it for history lovers!

The History and Ethnography Museum is located in the Stadthuys Building, its location at the junction of the City Road and Church Road, Melaka, Malaysia. In front of this building, better known as the 'Dutch Square', there is the Victoria Jewel and the Tan Beng Seng Clock Tower which was built in 1886. The History Museum is located on level 2 and the Ethnografl Museum on the 1st floor of the Stadthuys Building. The Ethnographic Museum gives particular emphasis to the local life style of the various races - Malay, Chinese, Indian, Baba Nyonya, Chetti and Portuguese. An overview of wedding customs, the way of life, the equipment used, the choice of musical instruments and the form of farming is the main focus of this museum. The exhibits are a collection of periodical porcelain, various types of weapons, currency from within and abroad and various another collection during the Dutch occupation in Melaka. The History Museum is located on the first floor of Melaka's history which is a pillar of Malaysian history today from the opening of Malacca to the colonial era of Dutch, English, and Japanese until independence. Based on existing historical paintings and artifacts, visitors will appreciate Melaka's excellence from the beginning of creation, excellence enjoyed, struggle for independence and the modernity of the existing.

This musuem is a good place to get a heads up on the history of Malacca. Do not miss out on the Cheng Ho gallery upstairs beyond the courtyard. There are guided sessions on Saturdays and Sundays at 10.30am and 2.30pm. Also don't miss the emblic tree at the carpark of which Malacca is named after

There are guided tours at 10:30 and 14:30.no extra charge. Great museum if you want to learn about the rich history of this area. Well worth the time. Very educational.
