Porta Sempione ("Simplon Gate") is a city gate of Milan, Italy. The name is used both to refer to the gate proper and to the surrounding district (quartiere), a part of the Zone 1 division (the historic city centre), including the major avenue of Corso Sempione. The gate is marked by a landmark triumphal arch called Arco della Pace ("Arch of Peace"), dating back to the 19th century, although its origins can be traced back to a gate of the Roman walls of Milan.
A gate that roughly corresponds to modern Porta Sempione was already part of Roman walls of Milan. It was called Porta Giovia ("Jupiter's Gate") and was located at the end of modern Via San Giovanni sul Muro. At the time, the gate was meant to control an important road leading to what is now Castelseprio. Very little remains of the original Roman structure; some Roman tombstones that used to be placed by the outer side of the walls have been employed in the construction of later buildings such as the Basilica of Saint Simplician (located in Corso Garibaldi).

The Arco della Pace is a triumphal arch of Milan located at the beginning of Corso Sempione. Dedicated to the peace between the European nations reached in 1815 with the Vienna Congress, it was inaugurated on 10 September 1838 with a pompous ceremony presided over by the newly crowned emperor Ferdinand I of Austria. The Arco della Pace is one of the major neoclassical monuments of Milan.

Place to relax, watch kids practicing cycling. There is a huge park opposite this. The best part is the easily available tram which is a fun ride.

I loved seeing this gate! Hardly any tourists in this area, so you get some superb photos of it! It's a stunning gate!

One of the better known (and most photographed) monuments in Milan. At the bottom of Parco Sempione, if you are strolling down from the Castello; or at the top of Corso Sempione if you are on tram 10 or heading here from City Life. Fun Fact #1: The arch is built on the site of the old Porta Giovia, which marks the start of the road from Milan to Paris. Fun Fact #2: This was the exit used by the Austrian imperial army to retreat from Milan in 1848.

Very nice monument! Looks a little the Brandenburg Gate in Germany or the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Currently there is construction work going on, on one side. So pay attention to the angle with which you take the pictures! On one side of the Arco della Pace, there's a very nice park and on the other, there are a lot of nice restaurants, including pizzerias.

Located at one end of Sempione Park, the large Arco della Pace is one of Milan’s more recognizable sights. A standard arc like you would see in France or Germany, this arc is a monument to peace. If you’re in the area, stroll by and snap a few pictures. It’s worth taking a look, especially for those into architecture or history. With the park and a number of nice restaurants nearby, it’s worth the trip to this part of the city.

Cool looking arc and a nice closing through the palace and park. It was quite empty when we arrived and makes for a nice quick resting spot. There are also some nearby gelato spots that were good too
