The Giardini Botanici Hanbury, also known as Villa Hanbury, are major botanical gardens operated by the University of Genoa. They are located at Corso Montecarlo 43, Mortola Inferiore, several km west of Ventimiglia, Italy.
The gardens were established by Sir Thomas Hanbury on a small, steep peninsula jutting southwards from an altitude of 103 meters down into the Mediterranean Sea. He purchased the extant Palazzo Orengo property in 1867, and over decades created the garden with the aid of pharmacologist Daniel Hanbury (his brother), the botanist and landscape designer Ludwig Winter, and scientists including Gustav Cronemayer, Kurt Dinter, and Alwin Berger. In 1912 the Hortus Mortolensis, the catalogue of the garden, contained 5800 species, although the garden itself had more. Hanbury died in 1907, but energetic plantings and improvements resumed after World War I under the direction of his daughter-in-law Lady Dorothy Hanbury.
Pretty gardens with some very interesting cactus gardens. Looked a bit shabby in parts, could do with a bit of a spruce up in some places. The villa is lovely and there were lots of little shady nooks to hang out in. Didn't go to the cafe, but there is one. The lady at the front desk was also delightful, could speak English too. It was a nice first stop on my drive from France to Italy!

Beautiful gardens with two planed routes to scale down to the coast. One route is a meandering route which allows you to see most of the garden. The other is a quick exist rout allowing a speedy return to the top. Please note it's not epically wheal chair friendly. Parking can be a problem.

Beautiful gardens. Already our 3rd visit. Atmospheric and peaceful, a must see if you are in the area.

We visited on the 7th of March 2018, the weather was cool but sunny, being so early in the year we had no great expectations. However we were stunned by the beauty of the place, there was very little in flower, though the variety and types of plants and trees was enough to keep us amazed throughout our visit. Every corner turned produced a new vista, which kept the camera clicking. The park is on the side of a steep hill, which drops down to the sea, but following the prescribed route was never difficult. Alternative routes or guides were available for disabled and the blind. The staff were very friendly, helpful and patient with my bad Italian. The cafe at the very bottom of the hill by the sea sold coffee, ice-cream, filled baguettes and cold drinks. A limited selection though adequate selection.

Lovely garden with many secret corners. You have to visit this garden, however not on a hot day like we did. Going down the slop was okay but the way back was not good. The garden is old and there for has a lot of karakter. The lady at the till wasn't too plesant but that musted spoil your walk about. The little canteen at the bottom is a great relaxing place after you walk down. The plants are amazing. Make sure you arrive early to have a parking spot.
