Just because of an annual cultural event (perahera) people justify their cruelty. Sad to see that young Elephant suffering . . Legs tied up in chains. . . Standing all day . . Can't move an inch. . . If he had the freedom how joyfully he will run n play in the forest. If you can understand his language,. . . read his mind. . . . you will definitely cry. . . 😢
Beautiful historic place where the bodhi tree at the temple is a sapling of the great bodhi tree in Anuradapura which in itself is a sapling from the bodhi tree under which the lord Buddha attained enlightenment.
Most popular buddhist temple in colombo Thats good place for bring your kids
This village has become the cynosure of all – Buddhist – non Buddhist, locals and foreigners – because of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya located therein. This temple is considered a place of great sanctity and veneration. And this is mainly due to its sacred Bodhi – tree. Historical records reveal that this Bodhi – tree is one of the 32 saplings that sprang from the sacred Bodhi – tree at Anuradhapura planted in the 3rd century B.C. The 32 saplings were distributed throughout the Island over 2000 years ago, and the one at Bellanwila temple is one of these 32 saplings. The belief in the sanctity of the Bodhi – tree and the temple precincts is so long – cherished and deep – rooted in the minds of the people, it is generally believed that a child who treads the ground under shade of this sacred Bodhi – tree will never fail in life.
A beautiful ancient famous temple famous among the locals. It’s usually always crowded, especially on the poya days. But that adds to the whole spiritual experience you expect out of a place like this. You can buy the required flowers and other items needed to worship right outside the temple gates.
Such a pity one can't take your pet dogs on a leash on this walk but stray dogs run around freely !
It was a really clean temple but the problem was with the Buddhists that visit here because their dress codes are like dresses with colours of black etc... There is an elephant in here. It seems that recently the head monk had passed away, according to the media, because of this elephant. Whatsoever, this is a good place everyone should visit...
