The Alte Pinakothek (German: [ˈʔaltə pinakoˈteːk], Old Pinakothek) is an art museum located in the Kunstareal area in Munich, Germany. It is one of the oldest galleries in the world and houses a significant collection of Old Master paintings. The name Alte (Old) Pinakothek refers to the time period covered by the collection—from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. The Neue Pinakothek, re-built in 1981, covers nineteenth-century art, and Pinakothek der Moderne, opened in 2002, exhibits modern art. All three galleries are part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, an organization of the Free state of Bavaria.
King Ludwig I of Bavaria ordered Leo von Klenze to erect a new building for the gallery for the Wittelsbach collection in 1826. The Alte Pinakothek was the largest museum in the world and structurally and conceptually well advanced through the convenient accommodation of skylights for the cabinets. Even the Neo-Renaissance exterior of the Pinakothek clearly stands out from the castle-like museum type common in the early 19th century. It is closely associated with the function and structure of the building as a museum. Very modern in its day, the building became exemplary for museum buildings in Germany and in Europe after its inauguration in 1836, and thus became a model for new galleries like the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and galleries in Rome, Brussels and Kassel.

This museum carries a fantastic collection. The oldest pieces are extremely exciting and you will be left wondering how it was possile to survive to this day and age. Would definitely recommend. The space in itslef is magnificent and you will find generous sitting areas in the exhibition rooms.

Its a great art gallery but it was just a little bit dull for me. all of the art was very traditional. Just a standard art gallery. Its okay but nothing amazing. It is quite expensive to get in and when I went only one gallery was open as well which was dissapointing.

On Sundays it's only 1€ etnree but on any other day is totally worth paying the full price. The building itself is amazing in and outside. People that work there are okay, nice.

Very nice collection/gallery of art. The paintings are so detailed, and most of it made me to stun and wonder. enjoyed the arts of human and amazed their creative paintings. Very peaceful and relaxing place for the local people. when i was there, one part of it was under renovation. the entry fee is 4€ which is reasonable. moreover will get a audio guide, which explains more about the art work. the audio guides are in five languages including english. The staffs are very friendly and they are maintaining it very well.

I used to live in Munich for years. It is always great feeling to visit the museums in Munich. Alte Pinakothek has very rich collections. I have always different surprise when visit it again and again. from Y1300 or earlier to Contemporary nowadays.....you can only say Wow...... But don't forget to enjoy a coffee around the corner. You will sometimes hear the discussion about the ART Works........

Only small part of it is open. It is impressive with enormous paintings by Rubens, beautiful Dutch paitings, but I've barely spent 2 hours there - and I listened to every audio guide article. Hopefully I can make another trip when they open the rest of it

What a beautiful building and amazing works of art. It was under construction when I was there so only half was open but still worth it. Students get in for €2 with ID.

It was a wonderful experience. The fact that parts are still undergoing renovations is well handled. The museum's internal spaces have a beautiful simplicity. And then there's the fabulous paintings too!

If you're an art lover.. please definitely visit this place. It usually takes 4 hours of time to cover every painting. You can complete the main potrait in less than 1 hour.

Sub-par museum with second rate paintings and awful service. The older lady at the front desk would not accept U.S. student IDs which discriminated against American students. If you do not accept American IDs, please be so kind as to list it on your website. Conclusion: there are far better museums in Munich than this one.

I like the place so much. The art collection is amazing! There are a lot of tourists so I would recommend to go there in the morning. What is cool you can buy combo ticket for all pinakotheks with some discount. But what is even more cool is that in Sunday tickets cost only 1 EUR!

Lots of Rembrandt , lots of Rubens. Amazing! As Neue Pinakothek Alte Pinakothek has a fantastic collection. Visit Munich just for the possibility to see these fantastic collections.
