The Old Town Hall (German Altes Rathaus), until 1874 the domicile of the municipality, serves today as a building for representative purposes for the city council in Munich. The Old Town Hall bounds the central square Marienplatz on its east side.
The building, documented for the first time in 1310, had its Grand Hall (Großer Saal) constructed in 1392/1394. The former Talburg Gate (Talburgtor) of the first city wall serves as spire. The Old Town Hall was re-designed in late-gothic style by Jörg von Halsbach 1470–1480. The Grand Hall was decorated by the Morris dancers, created by Erasmus Grasser. After alterations of the facade during the Renaissance and again in the Baroque the building was restored in neo-gothic style 1861–1864. In 1874 the municipality moved to the New Town Hall.

You walk through Karls Gate, which is striking. The old town is beautiful, but the entire area is crowded with modern retail stores, losing a touch of charm. Most of the restaurants in this part of town are in the alley side of the streets. We almost missed this and couldn't find a good place to eat when we first arrived. Look on the side streets and "alley side" for the charming restaurants.

Historical old neighborhood, big square Karlsplatz and Marienplatz. There are magnificent clock's towers, Fontaine, monument, Toy Museum, Glockenspiel im Rathausturm.Visiting Munich this is one of Must see! This tournament of 32 life size figures of knights which performed on top of the tower is spectacular !!! . Lots of stores and restaurants around. Not far from market with lots of folks goods.

One of the interesting historical buildings to see at Marienplatz is Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) which is situated on the eastern end of the public square. Like many buildings in this area of the Old Town, it is worth spending a few minutes to view and enjoy the architecture of Altes Rathaus. It seems there have been town hall buildings at this location since the early 14th century. What you see today is the 1860's Neo-Gothic style building which was restored after heavy damage during WWII. The exterior of the main building is attractive and well complements the Altes Rathaus tower, which dates back to the late 12th century when if formed part of the city wall fortifications. Worth further note, Altes Rathaus tower now serves as a Toy Museum (Spielzugmuseum) and providing yet another bit of fun is the Juliet Capulet Statue , located on the side of the building. This was a gift from the city of Verona to Munich in the 1970s.

Beautiful architecture, a rebuilt city hall, so it actually looks newer than the new city hall.
