The India Gate (formerly known as the All India War Memorial) is a war memorial located near the Kartavya path on the eastern edge of the "ceremonial axis" of New Delhi, formerly called duty path. It stands as a memorial to 84,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died between 1914 and 1921 in the First World War, in France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and elsewhere in the Near and the Far East, and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. 13,300 servicemen's names, including some soldiers and officers from the United Kingdom, are inscribed on the gate. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the gate evokes the architectural style of the memorial arch such as the Arch of Constantine, in Rome, and is often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the Gateway of India in Mumbai.
Following the Bangladesh Liberation war in 1972, a structure consisting of a black marble plinth with a reversed rifle, capped by a war helmet and bounded by four eternal flames, was built beneath the archway. This structure, called Amar Jawan Jyoti (Flame of the Immortal Soldier), has since 1971 served as India's tomb of the unknown soldier. India Gate is counted amongst the largest war memorials in India and every Republic Day, the Prime Minister visits the gate to pay their tributes to the Amar Jawan Jyoti, following which the Republic Day parade starts. India Gate is often a location for civil society protests.

As you silently say a prayer of thanks for those great souls, you notice the impeccably turned out soldiers guarding the site of the memorial. On most days you will find a large crowd milling around the monument, soaking in the beauty as they go around it to catch a 360 view of it. The area around the monument has massive beautifully manicured grass banks, where folks just sit down, resting or enjoying a small picnic. There is almost no construction in the vicinity of India gate thus you get an amazing view with vast open expanse on both sides, with grand Raj path road stretched out. The roads on the side are cordoned off from traffic, offering a good parking space. The place is always buzzing with mix of performers, street artists, photographers, vendors selling food and all kind of stuff. A must see site for anyone interested in history and culture.

You can see the president house on the other end of the road. It is located on the road where republic day parade takes place. You will have good options to eat and a bit of shopping as well. Games and small cars are also available from children's. All in all a great place. Worth a visit . Mornings are even better here. Crowd will be very less. Peace and people jogging and doing yoga all around as well.

India Gate was originally called All India War Memorial. Absolutely beautiful and amazing monument. Great architect. One can hang out with friend and family. Park is well maintained and lots of trees in and around the park. Best time to visit at early morning, at night or winter season. Every Indian should visit once in a life time. Reaching India gate is very easy, it is accessible from all parts of New Delhi by road and can be reached by bus, taxis and autos. Walkable distance from metro station and the nearest metro station is Central Secretariat on the yellow as well as violet lines.
