Bethesda Terrace and Fountain are two architectural features overlooking the southern shore of the Lake in New York City's Central Park. The fountain, with its Angel of the Waters statue, is located in the center of the terrace.
Bethesda Terrace's two levels are united by two grand staircases and a lesser one that passes under Terrace Drive. They provide passage southward to the Central Park Mall and Naumburg Bandshell at the center of the park. The upper terrace flanks the 72nd Street Cross Drive and the lower terrace provides a podium for viewing the Lake. The mustard-olive colored carved stone is New Brunswick sandstone, with a harder stone for cappings, with granite steps and landings, and herringbone pattern paving of Roman brick laid on edge.
A beautiful place to visit even in winter. There's probably less people around due to the cold. The occasional performer can be found here despite the cold, so it's great to stop for a while to enjoy the music, wandering around to see the amazing tiles and fading wall paintings without having to jostle for space or duck out of people's photoshoots.

There is a certain wave of magic in this specific area in Central Park. It shows when native New Yorkers and visitors tolerate wind chills and frosty weather to walk there. It is special, dynamic and captivating. A wonderful place in the middle of a chaotic concrete jungle.

I consider it the center of the park. It is so iconic and grand and there are so many beautiful things to see in the area. There are great street performers and musicians in the area as well.

Gorgeous spot. Very crowded when I visited on Christmas eve, but so picturesque and near lots of other good siteseeing within Central Park.

This terrace is popular with wedding photographers so you are sure to see a new couple if you stay long enough (particularly on a weekend). The view to fountain and lake is superb. Well landscaped and good accessibility.

Bethesda fountain and arcade is a wonderful meeting point in the southern area of Central Park. The view over the fountain and the small lake behind it is quite lovely from the top of the arcade which itself has a gorgeous mosaic ceiling .

One of the most photographed areas in Central Park. A perennial choice of pre-nuptial or nuptial photoshoots as well.

There are hundreds of things to do and see in Central Park, but Bathesda Terrace and Fountain are two essentials, predominantly because they are so recognizable and an essential part of the park. They are very centrally located, so from here you can go to the boathouse for lunch or boat rentals, to the Met, to the Natural History Museum, or to other locations within Central Park. Another key feature is that they have public bathrooms available for use here. It does get quite crowded during peak hours with tourists, street musicians, and other performers, so if you are looking to take pictures here, I would recommend early in the morning or in the evening on an overcast day when the terrace is lit up.

I always make it a point to drop by everytime I visit Central Park. The view is amazing any time of year. This place and the statue of the angel were featured in the opening credits of the miniseries, ‘Angels in America’, with the last scene zooming in to the face of the angel. Very neat scene (and very good show too!).

One of the most easily recognisable landmarks of Central Park is Bethesda Terrace, a beautiful arcaded structure and fine example of 19th-century architecture situated between The Mall and The Lake in Central Park. The creation of British-American architect Calvert Vaux, visitors are treated to a grand terrace, with a large bricked surface, nicely carved bridge, arches, staircase and walled structures. Bethesda Terrace is highlighted by an attractive, large-scale fountain and beautifully decorated and tiled under passage. Both of which are worth many pictures during time spent at the terrace. In the end, this is a neat area to spend half an hour during visits to Central Park, particularly when the fountains are turned on and the trees in the area are in bloom (spring) or with foliage (spring-autumn). With limited time in the park, its still worth passing by Bethesda Terrace if you can.

Very beautiful section of the park. Perfect place to take a nice walk with your family, or special someone. Plus you can do the classic "make a wish with a penny". This was actually the first time my girlfriend and I did that and was very special.

The terrace is most artfully designed with magnificent detailing within the stone structure. For further review; see the fountain listing. Truly magnificent 💝💝💝 Do Like 👍👍👍Always love 💜💙💜

We did a family trip to NYC for the 4th. On Location Tours offered a walking tour and this was our favorite spot. The lilies were in full bloom and just lovely. We took a few selfies and had some ice cream!
