Washington Old Hall is a historic manor house in Washington, Tyne and Wear, England. It lies in the centre of Washington, being surrounded by other villages. The building was the ancestral home of the family of George Washington (1732–1799), the first president of the United States.
William de Hertburne (originally William Bayard), an ancestor of George Washington, assumed tenancy of the Wessyngtonlands from the Bishop of Durham in the late 12th century. Soon after, he changed his name to William de Wessyngton (later Washington). In the early 15th century Sir William Mallory married Dionysia Tempest, the last Wessyngton heir at the Hall. Dionysia was daughter of Sir William Tempest and his cousin, Eleanor Wessyngton. In 1613, Sir John Mallory (a descendant of Sir William Mallory and Dionysia Tempest) and Anna Eure, shareholders in the Virginia Company, moved south to Sulgrave Manor in Northamptonshire, and the manor was sold to the Bishop of Durham.
I was pleasantly surprised with the building interior and the lavish medieval Manor House that it is. For £6 if you on a day of events, or if you’re simply one to see a medieval preserved home it’s really something. Of course the main draw is George Washington’s family and the real charm is to speak to one of the guides, they’re full of information that really make the visit. The gardens are beautiful and quite expansive. This is a charming place which if you enjoy History and would like a peaceful day out, perhaps having tea in the gardens and are NT members it’s worth it. For a visit here I’d recommend an hour, the house itself is pretty small so it’s a short visit to be sure. Visit Washington too as it’s rather lovely to have a brief look around the town.

Lovely little property, well kept gardens, very interesting house and plenty of opportunity to explore. We've always enjoyed our visits with my just turned two year old, well kept play area and plenty of sticks and nature see!

Fantastic little gem in Washington Village. It has lots of history behind it and very helpful friendly staff to help with the local knowledge of the area as well as the Old Hall. You will have a lovely time. They have a really big well kept garden called the nuttery. As it is full of hazelnut trees! On a nice day you can take a picnic and play croquet on the lawn at the top while your kids are exploring the garden and it's creatures. They have bird hides, beehives and many more bug exploration. The kids will tire themselves out running around the garden and trees having an adventure! Enjoy yourselves!

Great to visit a Northeast of England treasure connecting us so closely to America, it's first President, and also the great President Donald Trump. It would be nice to see him visit Washington Old Town from where the family of America's first great President hailed.

Even though we went in late spring the gardens were very pleasant and a lot of work being done. The house was very interesting and the lady explained everything in great details. Decent parking and a good cafe. Even a lift to get wheelchairs down to the garden area.

A beautiful morning visit to this jewel in the centre of the historical town of Washington. So much history, displayed by friendly and welcoming staff around the house and gardens. It was excellent to explore the house and we enjoyed a wonderful lunch in the café. We will definitely be visiting again in the future, it was absolutely excellent.

Really nice place to visit on a sunny day. Not easy to find. Not well signposted. Use a satnav to get there. There is a small car park just inside the entrance. Very tranquil in the middle of the week
