There seems to be ban on disabled people accessing this place. I don’t need a wheelchair but I don’t need stairs either. Entrance and exit is via a lot of stairs to a reception area with no lift access, and more stairs to get in and out of the museum. After much arm waving we were able to gain admission via the back disabled entrance from an unwilling guard. So no opportunity to see the famous large wall hangings. Nevertheless I had to pay for the privilege of missing this and other parts of the exhibition. My, more than honest, wife trekked down the stairs and back up with tickets, I wouldn’t have paid! There is s single small lift accessing parts of the gallery but more stairs as well. No chairs, but a much too low chaise longue in one room to watch a video allowing people to stand in front to block the view. Another song and dance to get out via the disabled entrance. I do not intend to go back and I do not recommend this place for a visit. 2 stars? The material we were allowed to see was if course first rate, pity we couldn’t see more.

They are not well organized for groups. They wouldn’t let us in with our knapsacks and even if there were lockers behind the guard, we had to leave them all outside in the drizzle. My colleague and I had to take turns standing outside waiting for our students. It was a nice museum but there were non of his most known works. The villa and surrounding garden were absolutely beautiful.

Fantastic museum: Matisse lived and painted here. Great location with park so you can eat a sandwich after a bery steep climb up from the town. Worth catching the bus, as it's very badly signposted to get to the museum from the town by foot and I think it took double as lo g to find it! Expensive entrance fee and the room where visitors can listen to Matisse' s voice teaching was closed, sadly.

Nice museum with a sizeable range of Matisse's works from various periods. Good references to his time spent in Nice with maps and photographs to guide the interested traveler to places where the artist has been. Great deals for those visiting other museums in the area and friendly staff who speak English.

Big rooms with not much in them except reproductions, works by other painters and some early day Matisse which just don't have the magic of his Nice paintings, his interiors with the sea glimpsed between the wooden shutters. I understand that these works have such a huge value that their natural place is in the world's big museums, but the visitor to the city is misled by the available tourist information to expect something more satisfying. As for the "rude" personnel, they must have read the comments because when I went today they stepped over themselves to be not just polite almost embarrassingly friendly (unusual for the French) with little jokes about my pocket knife which had to be left at the security gate and even my name, Lawrence, being the same as that of the lady who sold us the tickets, Laurence! A big empty-ish museum with a few things of interest, most of which can be easily viewed online. I am sorry to be so harsh, now being an adopted Niçois myself, but after I left I was glad that Laurence let me in free because I told her I reside in Nice... 10 euros would have been a rip-off!

Nice little museum with some lesser important works of Matisse. The most interesting part of the visit is the history on Matisse's life which is laid out in the route to follow through the different rooms. €10 entry ticket, which allows access for 24h to all of the museums that belong to the city of Nice. Most of those are not worth €10 on their own, so good to plan a day of doing some of these museums together.

Not my scene but gave it a go wasn't worth €10 female staff a bit terse only visit if you are into abstract art don't know what Henri was thinking about whilst he was painting some squares

Not exactly a free flow museum. Lots of rooms and stairs. Great content and don’t miss the video. It’s a short loop but worth seeing the artist at work. The Regina is next door and he would winter there. That’s an impressive building itself.

Dont even waste your money going there. The museum is dirty, not taken care of. The exhibition is so unimpressive. Please save your time and money, trust me, you will be better off. I am really sad you cannot put a negative vote, my take would be -5 stars as this is absolutely ridiculous. Another way of wasting taxpayer money. In summary, staff is rude, place is dirty and above all uninteresting material. An absolute joke! To be noted, I am used to Matisse works and really like the artist.

Friendly and informative staff at the desk, wonderful building from the outside and some fairly good priced souvenirs in the shop. Some interesting works from Matisee but would have loved there to be more! Use your €10 pass wisely and visit as many museums as possible during the 24hrs, many are not worth that on its own! Also visit the roman remains, gardens and monastery which are situated on the grounds.

Were preparing for exhibit, so lots of items weren't on display. Learned a lot about his life and journeys in this small museum. They had many informative displays, which I enjoyed. Have seen more of his art elsewhere.

I have been to more interesting museums but it was still interesting. No audio available at the entrance as far as I could tell. There is an Musee Matisse app you can download in advance. I found it invaluable. You will need to download the audio for individual exhibits once you are there but there is free wifi available if you don't have any data

Great museum. I learned a lot about Matisse and Picasso. Other museums are included in the price of the ticket. Under 18 is free, over 18 is €10 each. Lots of amazing pieces here to see. Pictures of behind the scenes of the paintings, sketches, preworks of the artist practicing the final piece, this museum has it all.

TL;Dr: don't bring small children here The museum and exhibition was excellent and interesting, however my visit ended on a foul note. I asked in the entrance if it was OK to bring my 16 month old daughter, and all was fine. When visiting the fourth floor (last part), at the end of the exhibition, my daughter suddenly cried out "mommy", twice, albeit very loud. This is something that children do, unfortunately. To my surprise, museum security rushed up closely and hushed directly at my daughter, quite violently (only verbally though), but I felt very uncomfortable, like I was stealing or destroying art of something. And of course very scary for my daughter. Needless to say, we left the museum immediately. . As a comparison, all other similar museums I visited this summer has met my daughters occasionally loud voice with understanding or playful conversation. I'd advise the museum not to let small children in if you intend to continue this kind of behavior, I'm very disappointed.

We caught the Matisse Picasso exhibit in the museum and we really appreciate it. We saw many works of Matisse and Picasso that demonstrated the artists influence on one another. On the whole we thought it was a really compact and well themed museum. Of course if one would be disappointed if you hope to catch the major works of Matisse there. If you go there wanting to learn more about Matisse, i think you will find a lot of interesting stuff.

There is currently a temporary exhibition on Matisse and Picasso. 2018 is the 100 year anniversary of the first time Matisse and Picasso headlined an art show together. The temporary exhibition displayed Picasso and Matisse paintings of similar subjects in the same room or sometimes, side by side. It was a great opportunity for one to compare and contrast these two masters. The most moving item in the show was a painting Picasso painted of Matisse's studio after Matisse had died. The permanent collection provided background on Matisse as well as showing some of his early traditional work. Later works were also on display. I am biased towards Matisse's involvement in the Fauvism movement. There were enough works here to leave me satisfied. I enjoyed my visit and I recommend this museum to everyone.

Museum is good and informative potentially a tad small. Staff spoke good English and the ticket price included other museums too. Students go free. But not special enough for 5 stars

I liked getting to museum since u can see where people in Nice live. Receptionists were friendly. Liked the museum space. Museum was nice, but we were kicked out of boutique in the museum 15 minutes before museum closes. So you know if you are planning to get something from there to do it earlier.
