The Historische Kunstbunker (Historic art bunker) is a tunnel complex under Nuremberg Castle in the old city of Nuremberg, southern Germany. It forms part of the Nuremberg Historic Mile.
In the Middle Ages, a network of rock passages was built in the hard sandstone of the castle. In the summer of 1940 the stone cellar of 52 Obere Schmiedgasse street was renovated for the protection of Nuremberg's artworks from Allied WWII air raids. The Neutorturm was also used as an art bunker from 1941 and the Paniersbunker under Paniersplatz from 1943. The bunker housed artworks and cultural artefacts looted from occupied countries in Europe.

About today's guided English tour Tour advertised to take place in English (all other tours starting later in the afternoon are advertised to be in German) while in reality there is no English tour guide, just someone asking what language should he set your audio guide on, and warning you to stay with the group in case you want to change rooms, in the meantime being very keen on explaining all details throughout the trip to the German participants, every word in German. No introduction. No intention to involve / no conversation with non locals. No time for any questions. Duration of the tour: 75mins Number of participants: 12 German participants: 2 Foreigner participants: 10

If you dont speak german, it is a waste of time. Rude tour guide who only speaks for the germans. You just have to follow with very basic audio guide which has a totally different timing from the pace of the guide. Don't you dare to ask questions. He is here only for the germans speaking (and we were a group of 2 german speakers and only 10 who didnt)

Dauer gesamt 90 Minuten. 45 Minuten hätten gereicht

This tour—delivered in English by an outstanding guude—was a highlight during our trip to Germany. The guide put the art storage bunker in historical context, describing the Nazi Party rise, its ties to Nuremberg, the preparations for war, the storage of art and artifacts in the former beer storage tunnels, the Allied bombardment, and the city's reconstruction. Highly recommend taking this tour.

This site was essential to my understanding of Nuremberg. Not only the art but the city's destruction in WWII are explained. Be sure to either book online or check ahead for tickets.
