I've traveled to many zoos and this one remains one of my favorites. It has a nice variety of animals and interactive experiences for kids and adults alike. My family has had a family membership for the Oakland Zoo for the past five years, and I encourage everyone who wants to visit to buy a membership. Being a member gives you free parking, early notification of new events, and has reciprocal benefits at most zoos across the country. I also recommend arriving early if you want to see the lions and tigers active opposed to just sleeping in their habits.

Not so big, but big enough to spend a day (10am to 4pm).. Love the Tigers, Lions and Elephants there, Other interesting animals there are Giraffe, Camel, Alligators, Tortoise, Chimpanzee, Zebra, Small python, Kangaroo(by train), birds and more.. Free gondola rides, the small one goes over Tigers and Lions, by Camel, Giraffe and Elephants, the big one takes you to a restaurant and another area that is opening in summer 2018.. The kids rides are not free with the entrance tickets, costs ~$2 to $4 per ride. Train ride is $3.5 per person . OR I think you can pay extra $24 for all the rides. Parking extra $10.

This zoo and it's staff are great. They have tons of animals and exhibits to look at, and plenty of kind and knowledgeable staff members. I only wish that they were able to have more of their stalls open for snacks and souvenirs. It seemed like most of the stalls away from the front of the park were not open. It could be because it's winter though. Great zoo though, and the keepers were feeding animals throughout the day, so it was fun to be able to actually see some active animals.

Love this zoo. The "cages" do not look like cages but rather they have created spaces to resemble the animal's natural habitat. Good variety and mix. To get to the giraffes and lions be prepared to do a bit of climbing. This zoo is not on a level area but the views from the gondola are nothing less than spectacular.

So fun! We have annual family passes and they paid for themselves in just 3 visits. Since we don't have to pay every time we go in we pop by for lunch (the food is really lame but the view is unbeatable), take friends and family, ride the gondola at sunset. I love the giraffes, elephants, hilarious monkeys, bats, camels. The baboons are AWESOME , always running around, playing tag, wrestling. And there's all ages from a tiny baby baboon that hangs out on it's mom's back to a big cool old dude who just chills while the others wait on him all day. The kids area at the Oakland zoo is perfect, too --both my 3 yo niece and 9yo nephew could both really enjoy almost all the rides (he was too tall for just one of them). And they have a Little Free Library on one of their nature paths!

What a fun time! We recently went here and had an absolute blast. We had a great time checking out all of the animals and were pleasantly surprised and the quality of the pens here. The staff was friendly and we can't wait to come back once the new zone opens up on the hill! Also, go see the elephants if you get the chance! They were so animated when we saw them, it was a very cool experience.

I haven't visited in a few years and so much has changed. The new area they are building higher up in the hills will be opening sometime soon and looks like it's going to be amazing. The area will have animals that are indigenous to California. It's great to see the money going to great improvements and additions to the zoo. As a child we'd visit every Easter and enjoyed all the animals. I now bring my children and they love it just as much as I did. My favorite are the Lions and tigers. Such beautiful and majestic creatures.

We love the zoo! The animals seem happy and comfortable and are usually easy to view. It is pretty hilly, and usually pretty busy (so many strollers!). There are nice spots to picnic and also an area with rides you can purchase tickets for. We always have a nice time.

What a pleasant surprise! Oakland does not have the best reputation, and I figured that I might be disappointed. I was wrong. So wrong. The zoo is well-maintained, the animals were well cared for, and it was fin for both the adults and children. The California enclosures are currently being built, but you can take the gondola up to the top of the zoo property for a spectacular view. From the cafe you can see a HUGE section of the bay, including the ship yards, bridges, and the city below. It is a bit breezy up there to say the least, so make sure to bring a sweater on cooler days. The zoo is great for photographers, with both animals and beautiful gardens to capture. We did not have enough time to see everything, even though we were there for 3.5 hours. We pass through the area often and will definitely be back. San Francisco Zoo has some neat exhibits, but many of the buildings and habitats are closed and rotting away. SF Zoo is mostly flat, whereas the Oakland Zoo is carved into the side of a small mountain. I have mobility issues, and the hills wore me out, so plan some extra time to stop and rest along the way if you have difficulty walking or tire easily. This zoo reminded me a lot of the San Diego Zoo, albeit on a bit smaller scale.

Thank you for taking such good care of the animals. I know I can count on Oakland Zoo to keep my kids smiling. The animals always look happy. It's more like an animal sanctuary. I'm a vegetarian and I support Oakland Zoo. I know many vegans that do as well. They've added a new deli center at the top of the rise ride. It's a great cafe with healthy foods. There's a restroom up there as well. Upon entrance to the zoo there's a gift shop, bring a few extra dollars, support the animals and staff.

This zoo is medium to small. They are expanding which will be a nice addition once done. I had a map and there are signs but I felt they could do a better job helping people figure out where they are and where to go. Park people I interacted with were polite but not overly friendly. Overall a great zoo and would definitely visit again. My only complaint is the website showed animals that are part of the upcoming addition and not currently available so it was misleading.

This is one of the few zoo's I actually like going to. It's clean, well laid out with a good variety of exotic animals in enclosures I consider reasonably humane. There's lots of goodies to entertain little ones. It's a good size too, you can cover it in about 3 hours at a leisurely place. The only thing I don't like about it is the crowd. Wow! it is popular on the weekends. If you get the chance to go on a weekday, you'll enjoy it much more.

Really nice exhibits to view the animals and get some nice photographs. Great selection of animals including elephants. The tram to the new facility/restaurant is free and the food was suprisingly good. The staff was friendly and helpful. A few places could use some maintenance but the overall experience was outstanding. Looking forward to going back. Get there earlier than later as parking can fill up quickly.

Great place to take the family. This place could use more interaction with animals or keepers walking talking to people on a regular. There was a magic show, which was good for little kids but not zoo related. Best part was the gondola. Could see some animals but mostly the ride was just exciting because you could see everything quick and fun.

Great zoo, new gondola is amazing! There are a lot of hills, so it's moderately strenuous to spend the day there. Apart from the zoo (separate, but adjoining) is a small amusement park for younger kids. The little train is very cool, as it enters the zoo and gives an up close view of some of the Australian animals as well as beautiful views of the whole Bay Area (on a clear day). Views from the new gondola station are great too, but it gets windy up there, so bring a jacket! Hope this helps you plan your visit.

I love going to the Oakland Zoo, they have lots of animals to see and fun things for the kids to to do. There's a train that takes you around a section of the property, a cable car system that takes you up and over the lions and giraffes to another section of the park with a great view of both Oakland and San Francisco cities from the cable cars. They also have a new cable car system that takes you on top of the hill to a beautiful restaurant and lovely view of the two cities. The staff all around the zoo are always very friendly and seems to be very knowledgeable about the animals, you'll see them hanging out around some of the main area of the zoo to answer any questions about the animals or to give directions to the to the guests. Overal, the Oakland Zoo is a wonderful little treasure in the city of Oakland which attracts visitors from all around the world. Have fun at the zoo!! I hope this helps.

The vegetation is lovely around the Zoo although it would be nice to have more trails to take various ways to different exhibits. The animals had well sized and varied enclosures only problem was vegetation was lush enough to make some hard to find in exhibits. The Gondola ride was highlight of trip and it will be nice to visit when paths and exhibits are open at the top. The best dining was at the top yet it was always crowded so hopefully they will add more seating, especially outside with the view. That was very limited. It would be a great setting for an evening event at the Zoo and it would be fun to see an adult type event utilizing the spectacular view of the Bay Area and San Francisco. We were fortunate to have perfect weather. Just enough breeze and temperate weather to make it very comfortable. It might get hot in mid-summer since it's exposed in areas and away from the coast. It's a great place to spend an active day with family.

Good zoo to do lot of other activities. Number of different animals. Went there with 2 years old grand child. At times felt that animals were at little distance but that may be good for them. Do take cable car ride up top to visit a nice restaurant.

Not enough animals. Not a wide verity. Some were not available to be seen. Some sections were closed off. Rides were under construction. I love animals and I would like to see a wider variety. There is no food options except one small place for some quick and expensive garbage. Visit and decide if you like it. I loved the animals I did see, however, I will not revisit the same venue.

Great place. Way better than Monterey Aquarium as far as price and exhibits is concerned. Also, I'm from L.A. and we have a famous zoo, but it is terrible compared to this one. Also, they have tons of teen volunteers helping out, which is great for us and them. Only negative is kids over 2 have a pretty high entrance fee, but I'll let it slide b/c of how great it is. It closes at 5, but we stayed 'till 530 and no one hassled us. Goat petting zoo is the best!!! We had to rush to experience everything. Also, bears are co-best (8

New gondola to new exhibits now. The Zoo is overall a great day out, and is certainly the better choice in the bay area for zoos. I do have "some" gripes though. First, the new area has a LARGE area dedicated to wolves. I saw zero wolves. Plenty of dead dish as feeding bait, but zero wolves. Bunt animals are unpredictable so I will give it a pass THIS time. The REAL gripe is with the staff here. Overwhelmingly, most of the staff can't be bothered or are clearly disinterested in their job. The number of faces displaying "I hate my job" is extremely noticeable and distracting from what could be a great experience.
