Saint John the Theologian, Kaneo (Macedonian: Свети Јован Канео, Latinic: Sveti Jovan Kaneo) or simply Saint John at Kaneo is a Macedonian Orthodox church situated on the cliff over Kaneo Beach overlooking Lake Ohrid in the city of Ohrid, North Macedonia. The church is dedicated to John of Patmos, the writer of Revelation, who has been by some considered to be the same person as John the Apostle. The construction date of the church remains unknown but documents detailing the church property suggest that it was built before the year 1447. Archaeologists believe that the church was constructed some time before the rise of the Ottoman Empire very likely in the 13th century. Restoration work in 1964 led to the discovery of frescoes in its dome.
The church has a cruciform architectural plan, with a rectangular base. The architect of the church is unknown. Reconstruction work was carried out on the church in the 14th century, shortly before the arrival of Ottoman Turks in Macedonia. A wooden iconostasis was constructed within the church and by the 20th century numerous saints along with the Virgin Mary have been portrayed on the apse. A fresco of Christ Pantocrator can be seen on the dome of the church. A fresco of Saint Clement of Ohrid (whose monastery, Saint Panteleimon, is located close to the church) accompanied by Saint Erasmus of Ohrid can also be seen on a wall of the church.

Very beautiful. A small dirt path leads to a look out point above the church. Beautiful when the sky is clear and the deep blue color of the lake contrasted with color of the church. But the church itself very small and maybe not worth the entrance fee. Surrounding area is wooded and with so many sakura/cherry blossom.

One of the most beautiful churches in all Ohrid. This church was on the old 500 Denari banknote from 1993.

Cerkiew św. Jana Teologa w Kaneo Orthodox church of St. John at Kaneo - it's Orthodox church on the cliff overlooking the lake Ohryd. Built in honor of St. John the Theologian, has a sublime atmosphere and unique views on a calm lake. It was founded in the fourteenth century on the plan of the polygon. It has one dome situated on the octagonal drum. The building's architecture combines elements of Byzantine and Armenian styles.

One of the churches in Ohrid with the most beautiful location on the coast of Ohrid lake. The wiew is breathtaking. In the spring is very beatiful with spring flowers blossom. It's monastery on the nort side of the Ohrid lake on the top of the rocks 100 meters above level of lake. This is place for the most beautiful pictures on the Ohrid lake.

Nice to look at, you have to pay 100MKDs to enter as a non Macedonian. Can't take photos inside either. I've seen a lot or churches before. Similar vibe here.

The beauty of this spot is not the church itself though, the view and walking path to go there is the highlight of Ofrid.

A beautiful trademark of Ohrid. Very old and historic, excellent for tourists. Definitely worth the climb. The view is breathtaking and you can take so many good photos. A perfect place if you are looking for peace and tranquility. Tourists have to pay for a ticket. Just absorb the scents from the Ohrid lake and enjoy.

Nothing beats this view. From the azure blue lake to the Albanian mountains in the distance and the tiny canoe paddlers and fisher boats down by the cliffs - it's relentlessly beautiful. Don't just look at the church, but be sure to take your time taking in all the beauty that's happening around you.

The beautiful view makes up for a lot. Have to pay if youre a tourist and theres not that much to see. Very important to bring a guide otherwise it will be a long walk for just 15 minutes of staring at an old church. Do the boat ride on the way back! Very nice to see and saves you the climb (once is nice, but twice is too much)

Beautiful area with a fun and scenic walk to get to (even in the rain), incredible for photos and for a sense of the historical significance of Ohrid, even moreso with a guide. Boat rides are available back to Ohrid Dock for a few euros and the views of the cliffs are well worth seeing the church and surrounding shrines & homes from the water.

The beautiful view and theres not that much to see something other... old church. Do the boat ride on the way back! Very nice to see and relax place. Have to pay if you like to see inside that is so poorly...

The quintessential image of Ohrid. Beautiful church and a beautiful setting. Beautiful Savior. King of Creation. My fellow Lutherans know the rest of the song!

Beautiful, centuries old church. Beautiful surroundings and very nice courtyard, with a unique view of Ohrid Lake. But very unusual and incomprehensible, why a segregation is made between domestic and foreign tourists !!! If the church is under protection and for its restoration, it is necessary to collect a ticket, in that case it is much more vigorous and counterproductive, to register tourists as domestic or foreigners !!! If there are no tickets for domestic tourists, because the church is in service, then does this mean that foreign tourists have no right to perform their religious rites, although many of them may be Orthodox !!! In no religious building in the developed world, there are no charges for visits to religious buildings that are in service, and it is nowhere forbidden to take a picture of the inside of the religious building, as is the case in this church !!!

Great position as most of the old religious buildings were built at the best of spots. Nice to look at, however you have to pay 100 MKD's to enter as a " foreigner" but FREE if your Macedonian?! What is really bad is that you can't take photos inside
