Akershus Fortress (Norwegian: Akershus Festning, pronounced [ɑkəʂˈhʉːs ˈfɛ̂sːtnɪŋ]) or Akershus Castle (Norwegian: Akershus slott [ɑkəʂˈhʉːs ˈslɔtː]) is a medieval castle in the Norwegian capital Oslo that was built to protect and provide a royal residence for the city. Since the Middle Ages the fortress has been the namesake and centre of the main fief and later main county of Akershus, which was originally one of Norway's four main regions and which included most of Eastern Norway. The fortress itself was located within the Akershus main county until 1919, and also within the smaller Akershus sub county until 1842.
The castle has also been used as a military base, a prison and is currently the temporary office of the Prime minister of Norway.

Lovely place. I went there at about 1pm, and the place was amazing. It has a big boundary and approachable by foot from the city center or the Oslo S station. When I was there, it was the time to change the guard, and I would recommend everyone to see the procedure then. Also, the view of Oslo fjord is great from here.

The castle is easily reached on foot from the city centre. It has a good view to Olson fjord, marina and Aker neighbourhood. This sight present a well-decorated interior and conserved external areas. Worth visiting for sure. It might be flooded by tourists during high season, summer, but it is nevertheless impressive.

Although on the google map information it says open till 9 p.m. we went there @5p.m. and we could not get inside. However, we walked around the castle and it was nice

The castle itself is not a big deal, it is basically a fortress, with some cannons, but the coolest thing about it is location, I think!, from where you can see a pretty good part of Oslo harbor, mountains and the other side of the bay/fjord. On sunny days the sunset is simply fantastic! Never saw the mix and intensity of colors I saw here, breathtaking!!!

My favourite spot in Oslo. You Can see Oslo's fjord fron there and enjoy a walk in the beautiful Park of the castle.
