Ostend (Dutch: Oostende, pronounced [ˌoːstˈɛndə] (listen); French: Ostende [ɔstɑ̃d]; German: Ostende [ɔstˈʔɛndə]; West Flemish: Ostende) is a coastal city and municipality, located in the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It comprises the boroughs of Mariakerke, Raversijde, Stene and Zandvoorde, and the city of Ostend proper – the largest on the Belgian coast.
In the Early Middle Ages, Ostend was a small village built on the east-end (oost-einde) of an island (originally called Testerep) between the North Sea and a beach lake. Although small, the village rose to the status of "town" around 1265, when the inhabitants were allowed to hold a market and to build a market hall.

Good for a day on the beach. No coffee shops or anything to refresh yourself nearby, water is (obviously) cold, but also dirty and smelly. No shadow, but still nice for a couple of hours.

The beach and the sea remind me of the great feeling that i had when i was a child visiting the black sea. That was 33 years ago...here at the Ostend beach that feeling was pretty intense. I liked it very much. The sea was calm, many people on the promenade, clean beach and many restaurants along the promenade.

Visited during the last week of April. Was Crowded with people.. It was sunny but very windy. Perfect to relax and have fun with family and friends.

Fantastic beach. Life guards are very active felt very safe there especially whith children. Lots to do. Lovely sea food available and Ice cream available on the beach brought around by people whith ice-cream carts. Different activities available to do. Bikes and when we were there there was a Disney sand castle exhibition there but that was expensive.lovely place to visit.
