Oxford Castle is a large, partly ruined Norman medieval castle on the western side of central Oxford in Oxfordshire, England. Most of the original moated, wooden motte and bailey castle was replaced in stone in the late 12th or early 13th century and the castle played an important role in the conflict of the Anarchy. In the 14th century the military value of the castle diminished and the site became used primarily for county administration and as a prison. The surviving rectangular St George's Tower is now believed to pre-date the remainder of the castle and be a watch tower associated with the original Saxon west gate of the city.

If you are traveling through the UK there are WAY better castles to see as far as structures go. But the tour guides are great at this one and the prison aspect and history is interesting.
Great day out for kids with lots of gruesome details about the history of the castle and prison. Regular shows and cultural events including outdoor films, ghost tours and summer Shakespeare in season. Plenty of places to eat in the castle complex and plenty of parking available in the nearby Westgate Centre.
Smells weird but the guided tour was entertaining while very informative. Would've stayed longer in the tour. Although we were free to visit more in depth the place after said visit.
An interesting part of Oxford with a long and interesting history. Don't miss walking through the old prison hotel and seeing how it has been converted. Plenty of family friendly places to eat and a not so attractive cheap modern pub. Seating outside available in the summer for most of the bars and restaurants.
It's not really a castle... It's the ruins of a castle!!! Hardly anything much to see. I took the guided tour and our guide was awesome ... But that's about it! Nothing else worth the waste of time.
Really enjoyed our tour. We had a tour with Robin. He made it very interesting and his intonation was keeping us up. Its not for people who are scared of narrow places and heights because you have to climb up through narrow stairs. When you get a nice weather you can have beautiful view from the castle tower.
After coming back to Oxford to visit there after living on Oxfordshire for many years, it was a lovely place to visit and see the sites. As they say you never know what you have on your door step until it's gone. Oxford is a very diverse area and at the same time it's a very beautiful area to visit. ..
Quite a small attraction. Very high tower to climb up, if you don't like heights or confined spaces it will not be for you. There is also an exhibit which is basically about a few famous prisoners. The guide we had was excellent and this brought it to life.
Only did the Mound on this visit. Sign on the gate says £1 per person to visit but most just walked through an open gate. Very nice staff (when I went in to pay my £1) and the full visit looked new and interesting; will visit that next time. Nice view from the top, particularly of the castle. Think we nailed it this season, a Summer visit may be more obscured with leave covered trees....
Good prison tour full of gruesome detail. Today the area has lots of pubs and eateries plus the Malmaison. You can also climb the castle mound for a small fee but it's not that exciting!

I visited Oxford Castle today, and booked a tour. It was very nice seeing the history of Oxford. The tour guide was dressed as one of the escaped prisoners, and was very good at explaining and welcomed questions. The views from the top are outstanding! (Photo attached) A must see for any local or tourist.
Fantastic place lots of things to do and a wonderful tour, great staff and ran professionally. Lovely good food and a great cafe next to an amazing shop! Love it!
Interesting place in Oxford, the remaining part of the castle isn't a big one, but into the complex you can eat something and it has a hotel too. I recommend you a short visit to see the rests of the castle and enjoy the shops you have there. It's located near the railway station so you can walk away from there.
The tour guides are friendly and very engaging. They take you around the tower and part of the old prison. They are full of useful and interesting information about the history of the tower and the oxford area. The sights are great and for the tours are good. I recommend having a look around if you are living around Oxford or visiting.
Very good tour, more prison than castle, It's a fascinating building great views from the tower, quite a few steps to get there. Well worth a visit.
Really enjoyed our tour. Peter was great. Really informative. Fantastic views across the city and a few gory stories of the prisoners throughout time (child friendly)
