Pickering Castle is a motte-and-bailey fortification in Pickering, North Yorkshire, England.
Pickering Castle was originally a timber and earth motte and bailey castle. It was developed into a stone motte and bailey castle which had a stone shell keep. The current inner ward was originally the bailey, and was built between 1180 and 1187. The keep was developed into a stone shell keep sometime during the years 1216 to 1236 along with the chapel – there is a reconstruction of the chapel at the site. Between the years 1323 and 1326 there was an outer ward and curtain wall built, along with three towers. There were also two ditches, one situated outside of the curtain wall and one in the outer ward. After this a gatehouse, ovens, hall and the storehouses were built. The castle is situated in the Vale of Pickering and has a considerably steep cliff on the west side which would have been a great defensive attribute.
Lovely staff very friendly I think when they have events on it will be better tiny carpark too and missing information on 1 of the places. Was nice too see good example of a castle and the staff was very knowable.

Nice little castle in pickering, not a whole lot of the castle remains but what is there is interesting enough, if you climb up the central mound the views all around are quite nice, can recommend a visit.

It is open to the public and free to access if you are part of the English Heritage. Pickering Castle dates back from the 13th century and although it has a lot of history and was used by medieval kings and other important historic figures it is now a ruin with not much to see.

A lovely castle in Pickering, unfortunately due to the nature of the place there isn't much disabled access

Surprisingly interesting location, hidden away at the top of the hill with fantastic views of the moors

Great ruins to explore and so very lush and green. Amazing views and great to hear the steam trains coming and going from the near by (barely a 5 minute walk) train station. The circular walk around the castle wall is worth a look too. Staff are enthusiastic and friendly.

Very interesting ruins. Fairly cheap to get in bearing in mind it's English Heritage (discounted entry for members). Some information on the castle but not necessarily a huge amount so your own resource could be handy.

Worth a visit for an hour or so. The staff were very friendly, and their are good views from the top of the central motte, but unfortunately there aren't any towers to climb or battlements to walk around as there are in some of the bigger castles.

Despite it being a wet and drizzly day, I enjoyed my visit to this ruined castle just outside the town centre of Pickering. Most of the walls and the motte are intact and the castle itself covers a large area. The parking is relatively straightforward. You get some good panoramic views over the Vale of Pickering which is one of the reasons for the castle’s location (the other, as explained inside, is the fact it was at the crossing of north-south and east-west trade routes).
