Vyšehrad (Czech for "upper castle") is a historic fort in Prague, Czech Republic, just over 3 km southeast of Prague Castle, on the east bank of the Vltava River. It was probably built in the 10th century. Inside the fort are the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul and the Vyšehrad Cemetery, containing the remains of many famous Czechs, such as Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Karel Čapek, and Alphonse Mucha. It also contains Prague's oldest Rotunda of St. Martin, from the 11th century.
Local legend holds that Vyšehrad was the location of the first settlement which later became Prague, though thus far this claim remains unsubstantiated.
The Vyšehrad is well worth a visit. It is easily accessible by the red line on the Metro. Within a short walk you can be there. There is a great wall walk with far reaching views and is very popular at weekends for locals to step out with their families. The cemetery is very interesting and the resting place of many famous people. The Basilica dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul is truly magnificent and worth paying the entrance fee. The park outside holds many memories for me and whatever the weather is worth a short visit. If you're heading back to the centre on the Metro then there are several other churches on route worth visiting.

An easily accessible high point in the city (Google maps will help you find a tram). The fortress provides an incredible view of the old town and the river (and the castle) as well as the rest of the city. A great way to spend an afternoon, even in winter. You can also enjoy lunch and beer from the cafes and stalls on the top of hill. Be aware that the fort is high up on a hill and requires some steep climbing up ramps and many steps, so take your time and stop to admire the view.

A must to visit place if you are in Prague. Entrance is free and there is a metro line with station about five minutes walk of the fortress. There is tourist info center so you can get map of the fortress and some explanations of the monuments. Also in the fortress there is about 4/5 pubs/cafe's/restaurants which serve fine beer with good prices and also some traditional Czechs meals

Vysehrad is worth seeking out. It's quite a walk from the centre of Prague but worth every step. The buildings and gardens are beautiful. Well kept and plenty of space to wander. There are various bars and cafes to sit and get a drink. We walked back to Prague along the river which is worth doing. Lots to see and more bars to have a rest in.

The best place in Prague! From all places that I have been in Prague, this has the best view to the city, including to the Prague Castle. It has a wonderful church and the best cemetery I have ever seen, there you can find famous or important people to Czech Republic, buried in weird graves (sometimes even funny). There is a art gallery, but I couldn't visit yet. Worth visiting!!

Great historic place with a wide story to share. Impressed by the view you can have on the park. It has statues situated in the park behind the church. Also has a cementery of famous historic people of Prague, a children park and good souvenir shops. Great experience if you love taking walks around nature as this is a very good for that.

We took the Rick Steves self walking tour of this area and loved it. It makes an excellent low key break from the bustle and crowds of the city center and provides a view into another aspect of the history of the city. Great overlooks of the river. Nice park like setting.

Very impressive view from this spot over Prague. The park is tidy and neat, you can enjoy a nice stroll here. Moreover, there is a restaurant with a good selection of foods and beers. I was a bit disappointed that some of the buildings were locked.

Lovely place. History is present here. And you can come with a picnic set (bottle included) and have a great day here and enjoy the view and let the kids play and there's plenty of public lavatories (some of them for a voluntary fee, some of them free) and nice views. Enjoy! (Go from Vyšehrad underground station and then take the stairs near the cemetery down to the river. It's really nice.)

Great views from top. Difficult to find entrance for newbies. Google needs to correct destination mark. Surprised , that there are no english displays. Great for evening time scenes. Recommended!

Amazing place away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist.. The view of the city from the area is awesome.. And is less crowded with almost very less tourist.. The church in this place is very old and depicts the gothic architecture of the medieval time. Very quiet and serene.

great place to visit, one of the key points to see here in prague. The cemetery is full of famous Czechs and the church is absolutely spectacular. The gold roof is just incredible. If i can remember it costs right in the range of about 20 crowns to get in to see the church. the fortress is mostly intact and on warm days you can find many people walking dogs and resting in the grass all over the place.

The basilica closes too early... But it's a great place! Including the park, the cemetery, and other surroundings. The best way to get there is to take a metro to the station Vyšehrad walk down through all the greenery and then take a tram from the stop Výtoň back to the city.

This place is absolutely stunning! The only thing that would have made it a better experience, would have been a tour guide or more info on boards to read. There is so much history here, I imagine if the walls could talk the stories would be limitless. The church is stunning, the cemetery beautiful, and the view from the wall is absolutely breathtaking. This is worth the time to find.

😍 great place for a walk, a picnic, enjoying the great views over the city, a romantic date at sunset time, having a beer in the beer garden, playing tennis and many more! Since it's not in the center of the city, it's also less crowded! With loads of things to do and see, you can definitely spend some good quality time over here. The cemetery, as weird add it might sound, is also an interesting attraction - this is the place where many famous Czech people are buried, so there are many sculptures, statutes, interesting mausoleums and tombstones. 🌅 PS: did I mention the awesome view over the city at sunset?

It's a beautiful place with a gorgeous City view of Prague. It's such a quite place and brings you in the area of previous millennium. There is a little window that gives you a great photo-op. It's a lovely colourful door that really attracts your attention and gives another great photo spot. Great place.

Very chill place with some of the most beautiful sights of the entire city. Plenty of locals enjoying their time there contributing a lot to the vibe. It's not very touristy so it's perfect for those of us that prefer to avoid crowded places.

Cool place to go with the child. The playground is big and mostly shaded. Also can go eat in several places, seating outside, no cars, very peaceful and beautiful place with affordable prices. From where you can continue your walk downstairs to the river side (to Naplavka).
