The Sun Voyager (Icelandic: Sólfar [ˈsouːlˌfaːr̥]) is a sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason, located next to the Sæbraut road in Reykjavík, Iceland. Sun Voyager is described as a dreamboat, or an ode to the Sun. The artist intended it to convey the promise of undiscovered territory, a dream of hope, progress and freedom.
In 1986, the district association of the west part of the city funded a competition for a new outdoor sculpture to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavík. Jón Gunnar's Sun Voyager won the competition, and the aluminium model (42.5 cm × 88 cm × 36 cm, 16.7 in × 34.6 in × 14.2 in) was presented to the city for enlargement. The full-sized Sun Voyager was eventually unveiled on Sæbraut on the birthday of the city of Reykjavík, August 18, 1990.

Really beautiful sculpture. The day was gray, so I'd love to see it with a prettier sky, but would recommend you go no matter what the day is like.

I did a 2 hours morning walk (7.30am , still dark on 23December 2017, before I left Iceland after a four days brief visit on packaged holidays) around the Coast, Harpa and old jetty The Sun Voyager stands out despite the lack of sunlight! It’s a fine piece of creation to tell the story of Iceland. There is also another interesting piece of rock work close by that looks like two bears from certain angle. I hope someone can shade some light as it was still dark. There are some other pieces of work as I walked along. To me, it is always refreshing wherever there is sea water!

The Sun Voyager; A very beautiful sculpture located at Sæbraut. Sometimes is over populated by tourist and this may cause annoyance if you are considering to take a photo but you may get unforgettable sunset view if you are lucky during your visits. Thanks to Jón Gunnar

Sólfarið, translated into English as 'The Sun Voyager' is a massive, stainless-steel sculpture of a boat by Jón Gunnar Árnason, set on granite beside the sea, (Sæbraut). Sun Voyager is described as a dreamboat, or an ode to the sun. The artist intended it to convey the promise of undiscovered territory, a dream of hope, progress and freedom. It displays a particular dominance on the sæbraut, and is a main feature on the walkway, which also encompasses some of the most stunning views of Iceland beyond the Reykjavik peninsula.

Such a picturesque location. Definitely one of the must see views in Reykjavík. Walk along the harbor front to this spot for a breathtaking view of the mountains across the bay. It is usually VERY windy, so don’t bring any items (umbrella, or accessories) that could catch the breeze.

Spent most of the day walking about Reykjavik on a transatlantic stopover. Iceland air lets you stay up to seven days without affecting your airfare price. Wandered about finding all kinds of cool stuff. The sculpture is amazing, and maybe even more so was the neat little geocache box just a few metres away down the walkway with the inscription: "In a crevice among some large rocks by the Atlantic Ocean in Reykjavik.". You should try and find it...

It's ok. Nothing exceptional or superlative but still a good spot for pictures and to give a short blink to the Reykjavik gulf.

Just a sculpture next to the seaside. Better to stop by with your visit to the Hepa Concert Hall and old harbour near by contains many seafood restaurants & bar.

This is an magnificent art piece representing a dreamboat to commemorate the sun. its designed by the artist Jón Gunnar Árnason but was built by Reynir Hjálmtýsson and crew. Jón newer saw the finished project since he sadly passed away the year before it was finnished in 1990. The scenery with the ocean in the back makes it a magnificent installation.
