Got such a sense of peace when we stepped in. It was also saddening to read the names and see the pictures of people who lost their lives during the Holocaust. This place was the highlight of my trip to Rhodes.
Kahal Shalom synagogue is traditional Sephardic style of having the "tevah" (the prayer reading table) in the center. The floor is decorated with graceful black and white mosaic stone patterns.
Beautiful traditional shul
I was on Rhodes for Yom Kippur. I had decided I was not going to observe this most important of the Jewish holidays. But I was not entirely comfortable with this decision, so I went to this synagogue. Women had to sit upstairs. It was very powerful and I ended up spending the entire day there. Jews from the cruise ships would step in for a short nod to this holy day. But when they then wanted to leave to see the rest of the island, the congregation wouldn't let them leave if it meant losing the minyan. These tourists played a very important role for the small congregation that was worshipping.
Very beautiful synagogue. Reserved really good.
Remarkable visit, particularly if you speak English because all signage and information is presented in Greek and English. Both a working synagogue (although there is only a small Jewish community in Rhodes these days) plus a museum and exhibition of Jewish life in the island along with the impact of persecution and the 2WW Holocaust. Gentle spiritual singing in the background makes for a gently spiritual, informative and intriguing experience.
Great historic monument of the Rhodos Jewish community. Beautifully architecture. Detailed illustration of origin, history and faith of this proud community.
