The Latvian War Museum (Latvian: Latvijas Kara muzejs) is a military museum in Riga, the capital of Latvia.
The Latvian War Museum was established on 15 October 1916 as the Latvian Riflemen Battalion Museum. Initially the museum had its premises at Tērbatas Street 1/3. The museum collected material relating to the Latvian Riflemen and World War I. In 1917, when Riga was bombarded, the museum was evacuated. In June 1919 the museum restored operations at the Powder Tower in old town Riga. The museum opened to the public in June 1921.
Very interesting museum especially the I WW showroom. Free entry and four floors of interesting exhibition. If one is interested of war and fighting or history then worth of visiting.

Place you should definitely visit if you are interested in the history of this country and much more. Great stuff, ready to help with anything. Nice thing is that you can left your belongings in the entrance and walk just with your hands free.

Big museum with a lot of stuff. Some of the newer areas are really well displayed with information in multiple languages however some of the rooms are only in Latvian. There is also a lot of the same items but still enough to look at and have a great time. And that all without admission costs.

The museum has a lot of stuff, and is very big. We spent about two hours looking through everything, but still missed some stuff. The organization is somewhat confusing, and the explanations in English aren't the best (very thick binders filled with text and graphics explaining very specific details of Latvian military history, strategies etc). Would've been nice to have a guide, but there were only tours in Latvian available. Ah well, motivation to learn the language maybe :)

Big FREE museum:). Free lockers for coats and bags, you can take bag with you if you have valuables. Its an excellent museum! Latvia has made a perfect war museum!

Every time I return to this museum I seem to discover something new. The Latvian war museum is a great way to learn about Latvia and its history. From way back during medieval times, through the turmoils of the 19th & 20th centuries, and up to modern times, the museum tells the story of Latvia through various objects obtained from those times accompanied by text (available both in English & Latvian).

Wonderful. Covers historic periods from Latvian birth through all wartime periods and the years between the two world wars. In that periods special exhibit was the submarine “Spidola”. My father was in France overseeing some of the mechanical aspects of the sub (in the mid ‘20’s.) And served as 1st officer until it’s loss in WW II.. that was truly an emotional moment seeing the sub and my father in the crew photo.

Free entrance, but needs more information in English as almost all is written in Latvian. It has a great exposition of the military history of Latvia, from the medieval knights to the current soldiers serving as blue helmets in the United Nations.

Fantastic museum covering the majority if not all of the history of Latvia's military and conflicts. So many things to see and read but definitely with taking to time to do.

An excellent bargain - it's free. We got a great overview of Latvian history in a bit over an hour. It really is impressive what this people has endured. It's a bit heavy on models and dioramas, but there are several floors of more modern displays that are very well curated. The WWI area has a particularly good collection of artifacts with excellent narrative in Latvian and English giving context to the horrors of that war in Latvia.

Museum shows a wide Latvia history from early ages. There are 4-5 floors of exhibitions, each has rooms and areas with different historical timeline events. You could easily spend half a day here, if you want to get some knowledge. Even running through will get you a bit. In general, it is a good war museum, with interesting shows and stories, all what you need to know about Latvia.

I liked the Latvian History museum. I am pleased that they provide an english translation for most exhibits but the translation is a booklet on a chain which can be a bit awkward to read. I am grateful that they do an english version, as their focus seems to be on a Latvian audience, especially young Latvians, who need to know the struggles and sacrifices made in Latvian history. Very interesting and definitely worth a visit.

A war museum located at the edge of the old city. It has an expansive display area and stretches from 1400s to the present day as far as its exhibits. Most of the displays are in Latvian, although there are English, French, and Russian guides you can pick up for the individual exhibits and some of the newer exhibits do have exhibit information in multiple languages. free to enter, and you can't beat that. Recommended.

It could do with a native English speaker to go through and correct some of the grammar and translate some of the interpretation material that has yet to be completed. Expect to spend 2 hours here at least.
