Riga Zoo is a city-owned zoo in Riga, Latvia. It is located in Mežaparks neighbourhood next to the Mežaparks park, on the western bank of Ķīšezers lake. Riga Zoo houses around 4000 animals of nearly 500 species and is visited by 250–300,000 visitors annually. The zoo has a branch "Cīruļi" in Liepāja District, Kalvene parish, established in 1996, it has an area of 135 hectares (330 acres).
In 1908 a society was established to coordinate the formation of the zoo, and in April 1911, 16.4 ha (41 acres) of land was allocated for this purpose. The zoo was opened to the public on 14 October 1912; it housed 267 animals of 88 species at the time. Many animals were donated to the zoo; in 1914, the zoo received 538 animals.

Good medium size zoo with enough animals to entertain you for atleast 2 hours. The zoo itself is not really big but just as big as you'd expect for that price. The animals are kept in large enough cages with much room indoors as outdoors. They are building some new residents for some new animals at the moment and working hard to clean up the place because right now it can sometimes look a bit plain. The variety of animals for the size of zoo is excellent. You have multiple residents for all types of reptilians, fish, birds and the more bigger animals like giraffes and hippo's. There is also a little zoo for the children with chicken, goats and sheep. So would recommend this zoo if you are in the neighborhood or visiting Riga for a few days because it's just a 30 minute tram ride away.

What a place..!!! Loved the whole experience.. Its very easy to access with tram 11 dropping at Mezaparks - right in front of the zoo.. The ticket is priced at 3€ which is fine... They have a wide variety of animals... The two humped camel.. Multiple varieties of owls, monkeys, insects, frogs, husbandy animals, wild and exotic birds etc.. Looks like the animals are well kept and looked nourished.. The temperature was also taken care for sensitive and tropical animals.. The frozen lake view was breathtaking at the altar... Must visit if you are in Riga..

The price is totally worth it. In the winter season there are not a lot of animals. We went on a working day and were the only one in the zoo. Although it was a nice visit

I visited Riga zoo on Saturday morning, naturally it is freezing so I was glad to see the majority of the animals where kept inside warm houses. Sadly there was a tiger that had been shut in its pen, it was making a sound similar to that of a crying cat, it kept moving back and forth passed its cage opening. Other than this the zoo is great 6€ per adult which compared to other Zoos is very cheap

Not up to 'western' standards. But overall not bad. Entry is very cheap. So, something you might want to visit, if you have a spare day in Riga.

Many animals are walking in spacious enclosures. It is easy to find. A huge area and plenty of space not only to see the animals, but also to have a good weekend afternoon.

Nice zoo with plenty of animals if all kinds. There are also nice exhibitions with animal species collections. Good to visit with kids (there is also a playground for them, open air). In cold climate, tropical home could be visited, where is always warm and comfortable.

Taken into consideration that it was March, a very good amount of animals were on display. The entrance and parking fees were next to nothing compared to how much there was to see. As a minus, it was hard to tell which of the "animal houses" were open and which were closed. Also some animals appeared to be in slightly poor and tight conditions (however, this may just be due to the winter time) All-in-all, would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Riga and looking for a cheap and entertaining way to spend the day.
