Rome (Italian and Latin: Roma [ˈroːma] (listen)) is the capital city of Italy. It is also the capital of the Lazio region, the centre of the Metropolitan City of Rome, and a special comune named Comune di Roma Capitale. With 2,860,009 residents in 1,285 km2 (496.1 sq mi), Rome is the country's most populated comune and the third most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. The Metropolitan City of Rome, with a population of 4,355,725 residents, is the most populous metropolitan city in Italy. Its metropolitan area is the third-most populous within Italy. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. Vatican City (the smallest country in the world) is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city. Rome is often referred to as the City of Seven Hills due to its geographic location, and also as the "Eternal City". Rome is generally considered to be the "cradle of Western civilisation and Christian culture", and the centre of the Catholic Church.
Rome's history spans 28 centuries. While Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome at around 753 BC, the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it a major human settlement for almost three millennia and one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe. The city's early population originated from a mix of Latins, Etruscans, and Sabines. Eventually, the city successively became the capital of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, and is regarded by many as the first-ever Imperial city and metropolis. It was first called The Eternal City (Latin: Urbs Aeterna; Italian: La Città Eterna) by the Roman poet Tibullus in the 1st century BC, and the expression was also taken up by Ovid, Virgil, and Livy. Rome is also called "Caput Mundi" (Capital of the World). After the fall of the Empire in the west, which marked the beginning of the Middle Ages, Rome slowly fell under the political control of the Papacy, and in the 8th century, it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. Beginning with the Renaissance, almost all popes since Nicholas V (1447–1455) pursued a coherent architectural and urban programme over four hundred years, aimed at making the city the artistic and cultural centre of the world. In this way, Rome became first one of the major centres of the Renaissance, and then the birthplace of both the Baroque style and Neoclassicism. Famous artists, painters, sculptors, and architects made Rome the centre of their activity, creating masterpieces throughout the city. In 1871, Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, which, in 1946, became the Italian Republic.

Beautiful square atop a hill, with museums on two sides and the town hall on another. It features a famous statue in the center, a copy as the actual one stands in the Capitoline museum in the square. There is also a beautiful fountain with statues on either side representing two rivers, and then a statue of Rome in the middle. As Michelangelo designed this square, everything is beautiful. Even the design of the tiles lining the ground of the square forms a beautiful pattern, almost like a flower, now so well known and recognized that can find it used as a pattern in jewelery.

This is a very nice square which isn't that busy like others in Rome. It's pretty impressive with the beautiful buildings around and a impressive equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius which is actually a copy of the one which is in the museum on the square. The square is atop a small hill so the views from there are very good. I recommend visiting both day and night because it's that good.

A very nice place to visit when you are near the Colloseum and the monument of Vittorio Emanuel. The square has a nice statue and the Capitol Museum. It's worth a visit!

Great sights of Rome. Square designed by Michelangelo. The Townhall of Rome is located at this site. The statue of Marcus Aurelius is a replica of the one found at the Capitoline museums, and it remained untouched for centuries because the Catholic church believed it depicted Constantine the Great (benefactor of the Church) and not the one of a Pagan emperor

Actually one of the chillest places I went to in Rome: there is room to breathe and enjoy your surroundings for once. You can take in a lot of the forum without buying a forum / colosseum ticket, in case you were wondering.

My group didn't go to the museum here, but being able to see the old city government buildings was awesome. The statues outside the buildings were beautiful.

Wise building layout for grand approach One of many places in Rome to take a shot. Nice plaza with a lot of beautiful architectural elements. Crown people here sometimes , beware your belonging all the time. Anyway it's worth to walk around, atmosphere and surroundings are lovely.

One of the place people tend to miss whilst in Rome, apparently. Stunning monuments and architecture. If you've time, pop into the museum's atop of the stairs, very interesting.

Lots of things to see... but be aware that the staff starts closing the museum 15-20 minutes earlier than the actual closing... so rude... consider this when you buy your ticket. . Give yourself enough time...

Always a nice place to see and the museum on the place is nice too. Offering some shade and fresh air.
