Piazza Navona (pronounced [ˈpjattsa naˈvoːna]) is a public open space in Rome, Italy. It is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, built in the 1st century AD, and follows the form of the open space of the stadium. The ancient Romans went there to watch the agones ("games"), and hence it was known as "Circus Agonalis" ("competition arena"). It is believed that over time the name changed to in avone to navone and eventually to navona.
Defined as a public space in the last years of 15th century, when the city market was transferred there from the Campidoglio, Piazza Navona was transformed into a highly significant example of Baroque Roman architecture and art during the pontificate of Innocent X, who reigned from 1644 until 1655, and whose family palace, the Palazzo Pamphili, faced the piazza. It features important sculptural creations: in the centre stands the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fountain of the Four Rivers (1651) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, topped by the Obelisk of Domitian, brought in pieces from the Circus of Maxentius; the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone by Francesco Borromini, Girolamo Rainaldi, Carlo Rainaldi and others; and the aforementioned Pamphili palace, also by Girolamo Rainaldi, that accommodates the long gallery designed by Borromini and frescoed by Pietro da Cortona.

Domiziano Ristorante - Bar - Grill,,,naturally, everybody has a unique favorite type and taste of their most desirable pizza. Not many, if any, ever saw Francesca down even a mere slice, but that all changed...

Great fountain with obelisk. It depicts the four major rivers of the time with each statue representing the Nile, Danube, Ganges, and Rio de la Plata. In the middle, there is an ancient Egyptian obelisk. Definitely come and look at this fountain.

The fountain & square is beautiful but the foreign street vendors from Africa tend to put you off spending a lot of time here.

My favorite fountain (other than THE Trevi Fountain), that I have seen in Rome. Right in the middle of the Piazza, so it's easy to locate. Usually surrounded by a crowd. It really is a very lovely fountain and of you go at the right time you can enjoy the Plaza and have lunch without a crowd. Check it out.

One of three fountains in this square, it is the largest of the three and has beautiful marble work. Definitely worth taking the time to come see these three fountains.

Gorgeous fountain that is just as impressive as all the others, perched in the middle of the plaza, it is easy to take some awesome pictures of this beautiful fountain.

Maybe is not as famous as Trevi, but for sure it's a very nice fountain. It's worth a visit, as is the entire square: Piazza Navona. There are two more fountains, a beautiful painted church, and several shopping places. Here we found a very interesting book about Rome during the Roman Empire, with models of important buildings of the Forum.
