San Pietro in Vincoli ([sam ˈpjɛːtro iɱ ˈviŋkoli]; Saint Peter in Chains) is a Roman Catholic titular church and minor basilica in Rome, Italy, best known for being the home of Michelangelo's statue of Moses, part of the tomb of Pope Julius II. The Titulus S. Petri ad vincula was assigned on 20 November 2010, to Donald Wuerl. The previous Cardinal Priest of the basilica was Pío Laghi, who died on 11 January 2009.
Next to the church is hosted the Faculty of Engineering of La Sapienza University, in the former associated convent. This is named "San Pietro in Vincoli" per antonomasia. The church is on the Oppian Hill near Cavour metro station, a short distance from the Colosseum.
Interesting church. Michelangelo's Moses wonderful. Remnants of chains that held St.Peter before his death interesting. Real?Short distance from Colosseum, but nowhere near as busy, & free.

It's not easy finding this church in the heart of Rome, but it's well worth the visit. It's said to house the original chains which held Peter when he was taken prisoner in Rome. Unlike some of the other attractions entrance is free and the church maintains a reverent feeling despite being open to believers or tourists. From the outside it is quite an unassuming building but quite beautiful inside church!

I am not religious, but what an amazing site. The Michelangelo sculpture of Moses was worth the trip. Take 0.50euro to turn the lights on the sculpture. We went early 9am and were the only people in the church.

At 09:00 it was me and 2 others. Peaceful and beautiful but slightly macabre. Free entry. Worth a visit to or from the colloseum.

Really am incredible Basilica. Enormous, with amazing sculptures and art. Admission is free, and the long line was faster than I expected. It does cost a bit too go up in the dome. I didn't do that due to time constraints. Ignore the people trying to sell you tours outside. Most (all?) of them are lying about savings and alternatives.

Surprise!. If you don't know what is inside this church, you must visit one of the most amazing pieces of sculpture of all mankind. Michelangelo's Moses. indescribable! Go there and enjoy.

Very interesting Church, and maybe many people don't know that there is Michelangelo's Moses inside ;)

Of course go to see Michelangelo's "Moses". You will stare at it and wait for it to move because it is that much of a masterpiece and one of his most incredible creations, but go to also look at the crypts on the left side of the basilica 2 cardinals and the incredibly dark, but beautiful gothic scultupres that adorn their crypts. When you try to research them, there is no information found really. I have contacted the Vatican twice about it. First inquiry was met with silence. The second was met with a simple, "we do not have any information to give to you."

A must stop when visiting the Colosseum. The church has the famous Moses by Michelangelo. Awesome.

Nice walk from Via Cavour up to San Pietro in Vincoli'Church with Michelangelo's master piece! San Pietro in Vincoli (Saint Peter in Chains) was built during the fifth century to house the relic of Saint Peter’s chains when he was imprisoned in Jerusalem. The church is also renowned because it houses Michelangelo’s statue of Moses.

One of the best sculptures in Western art, I would have regretted leaving Rome without having seen the Moses.

This church is famous of Michael Angelo's sculpture. He is so talented!! People come from all over the world to admire his work. There is a machine in front of the sculpture... donate 1 euro, there would be lights on, the sculpture were so focus by the light. It only stays up for a few minutes then lights off. There are lots of seating area for you to take a break after all these walking in Rome. There are shops or street vendors selling drinks and snacks.

You should add this to your list of places to see for a couple of reasons: you'll find Michelangelo's Moses statue (it's beautiful, and Moses is sculpted in a marvelous way - look for the horns); and you'll find the chains that Peter wore when he was held captive leading up to his execution. It’s very close to the Colosseum and a few steps from Monti, where you can find great food (e.g. Grezzo for raw, vegan gelato, which is ALWAYS great on a hot day). Be sure to visit in the morning or in the afternoon — they are closed for lunch. ;)

Beautiful, quiet place. Watching Moses of Michelangelo from 12ft away is amazing. It's also not crowded at all. A hidden gem in the middle of Rome.

Qui si può vedere i vincoli di San Pietro. Here you can see the chains that Saint Peter was bound with.
