The Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven (Latin: Basilica Sanctae Mariae de Ara coeli in Capitolio, Italian: Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara coeli al Campidoglio) is a titular basilica in Rome, located on the highest summit of the Campidoglio. It is still the designated Church of the city council of Rome, which uses the ancient title of Senatus Populusque Romanus. The present Cardinal Priest of the Titulus Sanctae Mariae de Aracoeli is Salvatore De Giorgi.
The shrine is known for housing relics belonging to Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, various minor relics from the Holy Sepulchre, both the canonically crowned images of Nostra Signora di Mano di Oro di Aracoeli (1636) on the high altar and the Santo Bambino of Aracoeli (1897).

Breathtaking church on the Capitoline hill... was left speechless by the sheer richness of decoration in every part of the church. A special exhibition of vintage garments (??) was an added bonus!!

Wow... Climbed the steps, i tho i got to the dead end, but got through the door and the beauty of Basilica opened up on me. Wow... Its a very nice place, had light the candle for the one whos not around. When you go inside, make sure you come out through the other door, its wonderful. Love it so much.

Magnificent church with an amazing view! The long walk up the 141 steps (that's how many I counted) is hard but worth it to see the whole city of Rome spread out before you're eyes. Then stepping into the church, you discover what a hidden gem it really is. The ceilings, walls, and floor are all beautifully decorated with lavish ornaments and statues. It is grander and more impressive than the Sistine chapel however it does still pale in comparison with St Peters. Definitely worth a visit and what a lovely hidden gem it is!

Bumped into a wedding with the organ going full tilt. Spectacular setting.

Historical place with many layers of history embedded in the architecture. What is greatly appreciable is the respect for the different moments in history reflected in the artistic interiors. There has been no attempt to cancel or eclipse any historical period that stands out in the interiors or exteriors.
