The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere (Italian: Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere); English: Our Lady in Trastevere) is a titular minor basilica in the Trastevere district of Rome, and one of the oldest churches of Rome. The basic floor plan and wall structure of the church date back to the 340s, and much of the structure to 1140–43. The first sanctuary was built in 221 and 227 by Pope Callixtus I and later completed by Pope Julius I. The church has large areas of important mosaics from the late 13th century by Pietro Cavallini.
The inscription on the episcopal throne states that this is the first church in Rome dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus, although some claim that privilege belongs to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It is certainly one of the oldest churches in the city. A Christian house-church was founded here about 220 by Pope Saint Callixtus I (217–222) on the site of the Taberna meritoria, a refuge for retired soldiers. The area was made available for Christian use by Emperor Alexander Severus when he settled a dispute between the Christians and tavern-keepers, saying, according to the Liber Pontificalis "I prefer that it should belong to those who honor God, whatever be their form of worship." In 340, when Pope Julius I (337–352) rebuilt the titulus Callixti on a larger scale, it became the titulus Iulii in commemoration of his patronage and one of the original 25 parishes in Rome.

Impressive frescos and mosaics. Located at the Trastevere. One of the oldest churches in Rome about 221 and 227. One better appreciates this magnificent basilica when you take time to observe and follow the story as it presents itself on the mosaic high altar. Also take some time to see and meditate with the Gregorian chants playing at the background. It was a pleasant visit.

Beautiful basilica in a beautiful area! Go there, honestly - it doesn't look like much from the outside, but the interior is just astonishing. So many colours, gold and lots & lots of decoration! Furthermore, it's in a beautiful area to walk around and grab a bite of authentic pizza or sit for aperitivo in the sun. Don't wait, plan it in your schedule :)

A jewel inside! Shame for the scaffolding outside (as of April 2018) covering the facade... but it's even more pleasing what you will find inside.

The atmosphere is incredible, especially in the night. It is always packed with people hanging around. Americans love it, Italians too. Recommended a visit.

It has a very beautiful and open square surrounded by restaurants, and if you looking for a quite lovely enjoyable place to chill the evening, visit the area. You can find anything you might want to eat or drink within the area and is well visited by tourist and locals alike

Gorgeous church filled with exquisite mosaics and icons in a more Byzantine rather than Roman Catholic style. Half a black Madonna icon and some magnificent paintings. Well worth visiting, and the night life in the area is great too. Lots of hawkers and handicrafts sellers in the area. Tip: you can haggle with them for up to half price.

One of the more underrated attractions in Roma. The architecture is stunning and the church itself has a lot of very interesting stories and history surrounding it. The aura is there. My favourite church in all of Italy.

Great little chapel to visit! Definitely make sure you dress appropriately, it is considered very rude to enter without having your shoulders and knees covered, no matter how hot it is outside. Don't be those rude tourists, its a beautiful basilica they're letting you visit, so respect their rules!

A church that’s for local people. You won’t see lots of tourists hanging around. You will see local sitting at the piazza in front of the church and there are some performers performing their best to the audience

Beautiful church on a nice sqare. There are many paintings and frescoes inside. Trastevere has a good and interesting atmosphere. I like these streets.

Love this spot! Not super touristy and kind of tucked away in the very picturesque Trastevere neighborhood. Lovely!
