The Villa Farnesina is a Renaissance suburban villa in the Via della Lungara, in the district of Trastevere in Rome, central Italy.
The villa was built for Agostino Chigi, a rich Sienese banker and the treasurer of Pope Julius II. Between 1506 and 1510, the Sienese artist and pupil of Bramante, Baldassare Peruzzi, aided perhaps by Giuliano da Sangallo, designed and erected the villa. The novelty of this suburban villa design can be discerned from its differences from that of a typical urban palazzo (palace). Renaissance palaces typically faced onto a street and were decorated versions of defensive castles: rectangular blocks with rusticated ground floors and enclosing a courtyard. This villa, intended to be an airy summer pavilion, presented a side towards the street and was given a U-shaped plan with a five-bay loggia between the arms. In the original arrangement, the main entrance was through the north facing loggia which was open. Today, visitors enter on the south side and the loggia is glazed.

Every Saturday morning there is a guided tour in English at 10am. The entrance ticket is €6 + €4 for the tour and it was well worth it. The tour lasted an hour and the guide gave us the history of the building and it's owners, as well as discussing the frescoes. Extremely interesting.

Beautiful villa from the Renaissance period decorated with paintings from different artists, including Raphael. Quite a hidden gem in the city so it should be way less crowded than most famous villas. I'd recommend the audioguide which was quite nice to get more insight into the paintings details and context.

It’s nice to see some of these old Villas in good condition. If you love frescoes you’ll love this place. Raphael did many of the rooms. The grounds are small but nice to take a stroll.

Inside a spacious rennaisance villa surrounded by a garden with oranges, lovely paintings on the ceilings and walls celebrate the beauty of the human body. Unlike in Vatican, here the nudity is uncensored :-) Visiting Villa Farnesina is a pleasure for the eyes! Away from big crowds, this is the place to relax and enjoy delightful works of art.
