The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini's designs from 1706 to 1740 as a star fortress. Between the first half of 1700s and early 1920s it served as a prison for political criminals. It has been a museum since 1924.
Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. The museum has gradually become virtually the sole owner of the fortress building, except the structure occupied by the Saint Petersburg Mint (Monetniy Dvor).

They have a special combined offer for all the 5 museums at 600 rubles and you can do that in two days. I highly recommend the guided audios that go for 400 rubles. It makes it all worthwhile. The chimes go off at every hour and fill the whole place up with wonder. There are other attractions but you have to pay separately for them. The Amber Museum is free and they are really wonderful in educating you about the amber.

Very beautiful and historical place. A must visit in St. Petersburg. Nevertheless, a little bit too touristic in my opinion, as the huge amount of souvenir shops are somehow influencing the atmosphere of the place.

Unique architecture The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703. In the early 1920s, it was still used as a prison and execution ground by the Bolshevik government. Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. The museum has gradually become virtually the sole owner of the fortress building, except the structure occupied by the Saint Petersburg Mint.

This really is one of of the few MUST see things in St.Petersburg. a few hundred rubles for the various buildings is worth every penny. The burial place of the Tsars is worth every ruble. You really have to see it to fully experience it.

San Pete Keystone. Build more then 300 hundreds years ago as first fortress on Neva to protect important sea route for Russia. This fortress never fight but used as place for Russian imperators graves and as a prison ...such a strange combination but it is a part of history. Museums not so impressive as I expect but you can visit Peter and Paul Cathedral were tombs of the Peter the Great and Ekaterina the Great and not only... Second place is a museum in the commandant house. It will be enough! On my point of view. Prison museum is large but all spots are quite similar and boring.

Beautiful place with a historical and very imposing landmark. There is a small beach that offers a good vantage point to see the city from across the Neva River. Inside the fortress are various exhibits and museums. Definite a must-visit place in St. Petersburg

The Peter and Paul Fortress is a citadel built three hundred years ago. It's situated on a very beautiful island on the river Neva where you can take tons of stunning pictures. The site also has its gloomier side in form of the mausoleum which is the burial place of several famous tsars.

Not much to see at all. You buy a ticket for 4 exhibitions and the church. The church is interesting, but the rest is very underwhelming. Everything else has additional cost. Walking the walls is another 300 rub and even using the unpleasant toilet costs 30 rub. Walking around the outside of the walls along the beach is free, far more interesting and has nice views across the river.

Beautiful. Very peaceful place that takes you back to the times of Peter the Great. Have a stroll and enjoy the atmosphere. Make sure to visit the cathedral as it is the site where all the Romanovs are buried, including the last tzars. The museums and prisons were closed when I visited, but they looked like they're worth a visit.

Great place to be visited, especially on a sunny day. There is much history and culture, too, inside this citadel surrounded by the river Neva. There is also a beach but swimming in Neva is not recommended. Nice views across Neva on historic buildings on the neighbouring islands.

Stronghold in the center of Saint Petersburg, very worth visiting, especially the church with all the tombs of the Czars. If you look out around the premises you may spot the cat living there, but watch out as she does not give a lot of confidence to tourists ;)

Its a unique place that is very well maintained, not too crowded and its simply relaxing taking a walk through here and looking at these old buildings. This place is really worth seeing!

No questions - a must visit stop while one is in St. Petersburg. Try coming early to beat the crowds. Government exhibition (5 different locations) - best bang for the buck.

Great place, if you can get there on Saturdays then you can see the military show and hear the big gun firing up in the air. You should stop at the restaurant called Korushka and try that fish, it is similar to Smelt, but different. You should visit Peter the Grade resting spot if you can and his statue, it is one of a kind and really interesting looking one.

This was really great to go through! There were so many rooms filled with very good information. I did make a joke and put my arm around a mannequin to which an old woman that worked there yelled at me and then followed me around for the next five minutes. I couldn't help but laugh!
Isla Waterson | Aug 3, 2018
Wonderful place to visit and cheap for students! I spent 5 hours here and saw everything, the cathedral, Commandant house and prison are the best museums - definitely pay for the audioguide as there's little information otherwise.

If you're on a budget avoid hoi g inside but take the entrance and go to the river just behind this.... You can thank me later cause its a really good spot to sit or just stand there and enjoy both the city and the Fort view... Remember you have to enter the venue and not buy the ticket and just walk to the back side...
