Very good The State Russian Museum is the largest depository of Russian fine art in Saint Petersburg. It is also one of the largest museums in the country. The museum was established on April 13, 1895, upon enthronement of Nicholas II to commemorate his father, Alexander III. Its original collection was composed of artworks taken from the Hermitage Museum, Alexander Palace, and the Imperial Academy of Arts. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, many private collections were nationalized and relocated to the Russian Museum. These included Kazimir Malevich's Black Square.

The museum itself is a treasure, but the visit was totally ruined by one of the rude tour guides, who told us that: "We allow children into the museum, but you should not enter any room with a guide working, as the stroller is squeaky". I was like are you kidding me? The stuff is clearly ignorant. Especially with the world cup this summer, this is really upsetting. On top of that, you should know that the museum is not wheelchair accessible, as there are no elevators or even over the stairs things, and the stairs are long.

Ethnographic museum has a very good exposition about nationalities who live in Russia. There are a lot of them.

Very nice art museum. Without any context, the paintings and sculptures mean little, but if you have a local with you to explain culture and context, it's great. Absolutely beautiful ceilings in many places in the museum, too. Also notable - several large paintings were hung in rooms with sketches/details used by the artist in preparing the large final work. Very cool.

Palace with Russian art of last centuries, with very well known pieces. One of must-visit places in Saint-Petersburg to see history. But navigation inside is awful.

My favorite museum ( except for museum of artillery). Perfect exposition, almost all my favorite artist are there. Comparing too Hermitage this museum has smaller exposition but here you can't find too many tourists in one time. Because of that, this museum is best choice for summer months.

This museum is amazing for art lovers. Thousand of paintings are there which shows the history of Russia. Few amazing paintings shows the battles of Russia with other countries. Its located in Saint Petersburg close by Nevsky prospect. You need around 4 to 5 hours to see all the art work including painting, statues and other clay made object. I hope my review and pics will help you.

A must see in St Petersburg. The building and the artworks are monumental. A good glimpse into Russian art and culture through the various historic stages of the empire/union/federation. A full day is needed to see everything, if not a few. Make sure you don't miss the main collections on the second floor.

Astonishing museum with a huge collection of art pieces from many different periods. You can spend as many hours as you want valuing the pieces but also you can visit the museum going directly to the main points of interest of the museum. Ir worths to take a guide ( personal or audioguide)

The art museum I love best in this city full of art museums. Yes, it is not as opulent as the Hermitage; the rooms a lot less imposing, but how less money still created so much beauty is admirable. The other reason why I would rather go here is that my knowledge of Russian art is a lot better than Western-European art. The paintings here speak to me, because I know the history of the artists. The huge paintings of Repin; Vereshagin and his death while doing what he did best. Learn a bit about Russian art and this museum will mean a lot more than the Hermitage can, because it is not so crowded.
