Nonnberg Abbey (German: Stift Nonnberg) is a Benedictine monastery in Salzburg, Austria. Founded c. 712/715 by Saint Rupert of Salzburg, it is the oldest continuously existing nunnery in the German-speaking world. The monastery complex is today a protected monument and part of the Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
The convent was established beneath the Festungsberg hill and the ruined fortifications of the former Roman city of Juvavum. Its first abbess was Saint Erentrudis of Salzburg, who was either a niece or a sister of Bishop Rupert. The abbey's endowment was provided by the Agilolfing duke Theodo of Bavaria and his successor Theodbert.
Worth a visit for any sound of music fan. We went to the fortress via the funicular the walked down.

In its own right, it’s a beautiful abbey. Away from the traffic, it’s quiet and peaceful. I go inside and there’s a choir singing. This abbey was used for the external scenes of Maria’s abbey on the Sound of Music. There are no rolling green hills anywhere nearby for Maria to be beckoned from – a bit of Hollywood magic, that is – but I can imagine her coming through these gates.

It's okay, just a quiet church. But I should say that I was the only one here when I visited, and the life of the place presumably comes with its use.

A must stop for Sound of Music fans. But the view over the mountains south of Salzburg is also spectacular.

Came here to see the Abbey featured in Sound of Music. Great to see it in person (you have to go yourself, not available through tour). If you are willing to walk up all the steps to the Abbey, the views are fantastic
