The San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden, or Sunken Gardens in Brackenridge Park, San Antonio, Texas, opened in an abandoned limestone rock quarry in the early 20th century. It was known also as Chinese Tea Gardens, Chinese Tea Garden Gate, Chinese Sunken Garden Gate and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
The San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden (also known as the Sunken Gardens) in the U.S. state of Texas was developed on land donated to the city in 1899 by George Washington Brackenridge, president of the San Antonio Water Works Company. The ground was first broken around 1840 by German masons, who used the readily accessible limestone to supply the construction market. Many San Antonio buildings, including the Menger Hotel, were built with the stone from this quarry on the Rock Quarry Road.

Love going to this park right next to the kiddie park, the zoo and golf course i have been going here ever since i was a kid. The area is nice and has lots of places to eat. It is also a good place to have a bbq or maybe even go fishing. If you are looking for a good park this is one of the many i would recommend

One of the best parks here in this Great City of ours! Our family frequently comes to Brackenridge Park to either grill, feed the ducks, take our kiddos to the playground, or just to walk the trails. It's a nice and relaxing way to end the weekend. On our recent visit we saw a lot of "critters" out. Pretty neat sight for our kiddos.

Good atmosphere, nice spread, and ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT trees! The cypress along the water are always my favorite, as well as some of the super funky live oaks that love to hug the earth. My favorite spots to hang out are along the banks of the water just behind the Witte; and along the banks closer to the golf course (more wild, not as manicured). The grills by most of the picnic tables are some of the best (made of bricks, low to the ground) for big spreads. Bring local firewood and do it up. Avoid the playground unless you have little people; but even then they would probably have more fun kicking a ball in the open fields under the gigantic pecan trees.

4 out of 5 stars only because while doggy poop bags are provided at start of trail, that's the only place! And there are no trash receptacles along the trail so the trail is dotted with used doggy poop bags. The trail is beautiful! Makes a lively walk whether you are with a 4 footed friend or not! Also, there are information tags throughout the trail but none of the codes worked when we scanned them. Hopefully both of these minor things will be rectified in the future. There's a really nice dog park-one for large dogs and one for small dogs. Both are large and seem well attended and well tended.

I spent many summers in SA with my Father's people. We came here often. I still love it. When I was visiting my sister last year, we drove through after some heavy rains. In the Low Places the water was almost up to the floorboard. (I wonder why the voice to text software felt it necessary to capitalize Low Places. It's not like I have friends there.) Seeing the water lap up this High brought back wonderful childhood memories. This is one of many places where I can sense the presence of GOD.

This park is giant. My kids loved the train. There's plenty of benches around to have a picnic with your family before or after checking out the zoo right next door. The area is great for family photos as well. Lots of foliage and crazy looking trees to make your pictures a little unique.

Nice park to spend family time together at. Gets packed with people. Lots of picnic areas. Good for fishing. Ride the Eagle train if you want to enjoy a tour around the park. The zoo is located nearby.

Absolutely love this park. Beautiful scenery everywhere. Love how the river flows all around making this place super relaxing. Great little play area for the kids to play. Lots of tables for picnics or bbqing. Next to SA zoo. Also has a cute little train ride that’s super fun for the family.

Awesome place to walk animals or self! Theirs always the train that takes you on a tour all around the park and zoo! Very great ride and place to make memories! And the park is free! Train is just a few bucks but it's worth the smiles and laughs!

Beautiful views here. Nice to hear the sounds of the zoo animals as well. Makes you feel like your really with nature. Sad the animals have to be locked up in captivity though :( Wonderful place to have a family outing or even a birthday party or baby shower.

This is a great park to take your friends and family to. You can relax with a view of the river, ride the train or visit the zoo and tea gardens nearby. If you're hungry, it's right off of Broadway, with a lot of great restaurants right nearby. There's even public areas you can barbecue in if you wanna throw a party. It's a fairly active place as well, with lots of events and gatherings being hosted there, like Pokemon go gatherings and the like, and it's very community friendly and safe.

I always love your displays but I'm happiest when I see the joy of discovery on my 4 year old great granddaughters face! She left today telling her mom about a tarantula-not just a spider! She wouldn't go near the outside T-Rex when e got there. However, she couldn't wait to show her bravery after seeing the inside displays. She walked up to the cage, looked him in the eyes, and took hold of the fence like , : I'm not scared of you anymore!". We had a great family afternoon!

Loved the Zoo! All the GREAT inprovements are perfect for the animals. Warms my heart to see them more active! Love that they brought this baby Hippo to be with its Grandma Hippo! How fun. I go at least once a month so the pass is definitely worth it!

If I had to rank parks in the city this would be the winner hands down but in most cities the park with the museums and the zoos will always be the best. But I say that because this park is truly beautiful and it is a reflection of the era in which it was designed. Growing up in San Diego we had Balboa Park and using that as a baseline park of course Brackenridge doesn't meet the scale but it more than meets the expectation.

Great park for a picnic. As a photographer, I've done many sessions here beautiful spot. It's right next to the zoo which is really cool. A lot of trails. It's a huge park. Lots to do

Oh so many fond memories created at this park from feeding the ducks with my kids when they were little to taking a stroll along the river's edge with my husband. There is a great playground for the kids, walking trails, baseball fields, historical nature sites, fishing, picnic sites and so much more. Very naturally shaded park in the heart of San Antonio. Worth the visit for sure!

This place is gorgeous! We spent a few happy (though hot!) Hours exploring the trails and just enjoying the scenery. There is a sweet little noodle house, where you could grab lunch and a yoga class going when we arrived. The Japanese Tea Gardens are a gem nestled into busy San Antonio. The park and parking are both free and that is no small bonus. Perfect break from touristy crazy (what we were doing) or just a great Sunday afternoon if you live in the area, I'm sure!

On a recent visit we took the VIVA bus up here from downtown, specifically to ride the Zoo Eagle Train with our two toddlers. It was an enjoyable ride through this beautiful park. We also visited the Japanese Tea Garden, which was so pretty. We hope to spend more time in Brackenridge Park in a future visit.
