Casa Navarro is a historic site in San Antonio, Bexar County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The original house complex was the residence of Texas patriot José Antonio Navarro (1795–1871), a rancher, merchant, leading advocate for Tejano rights, and one of only two native-born Texans to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence. Navarro first bought the property, about 1.5 acres, in 1832. The limestone, caliche block, and adobe structures were built c. 1832–1855, and Navarro moved onto the property soon after.
The site is situated in the heart of old San Antonio, in what used to be a thriving Tejano neighborhood known as Laredito. The structures were acquired and restored by the San Antonio Conservation Society between 1960 and 1964, and the site was opened to the public in October 1964. The site was designated a Texas State Historic Landmark in 1962, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. On January 1, 2008, the house was transferred from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to the Texas Historical Commission. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016.

Hands on experience. This would be a good place to take kids. You go from building to building. Shows how Navarro was an important figure in the establishment of the Texas Republic, how he made sure native Tejanos weren't forgotten, how he was imprisoned in Mexico. For me, he was inspiring. A great human being, really. There are slide shows for the grownups, and for the kids, none of the exhibits are off limits. They can color, sweep, climb on the chairs, play with the kitchen equipment or just run around outside acting like little animals.

We concentrated on smaller, harder to find historic Republic of Texas sites in our current vacation. The Navarro Houses are definitely the best! The oldest dates from 1832, and all are restored accurately. Very friendly host, and very inexpensive admission. Student, senior & child discounts! Clean restrooms. Excellent videos. Period furniture & garden. Great displays on adobe brick making. HARD TO FIND.

Great way to spend the afternoon, especially with kids. The interactive exhibits and videos are fun and informative. Admission is only $4 and it goes to keep the museum up and running. José Antonio Navarro was a fascinating man and one of the fathers of the Republic of Texas. Every Texan should know his story, and the story of the Navarro family.

On Tuesday June 12, 2018 walked 12 minutes from hotel to get to Casa Navarro State Historic Site that was suppose to open at 10 am. Arrived at 10:05 and building was not yet open. Waited 10 minutes for someone to show up but no one did. Left at 10:15 and were disappointed because we were flying home that afternoon.

Kids loved the hands-on learning and historical fun. Their highlight of the day in San Antonio.
