Mission San Francisco de la Espada (also Mission Espada) is a Roman Rite Catholic mission established in 1690 by Spain and relocated in 1731 to present-day San Antonio, Texas, in what was then known as northern New Spain. The mission was built in order to convert local Native Americans to Christianity and solidify Spanish territorial claims in the New World against encroachment from France. Today, the structure is one of four missions that comprise San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
Founded in 1690 as San Francisco de los Tejas near Weches, Texas and southwest of present-day Alto, Texas, Mission San Francisco de la Espada was the second mission established in Texas.
Beautiful architecture. It was so nice to see the missions first hand. If you're anywhere near San Antonio, the missions are a must see. Such an important part of our country's history. I just wish I had been able to see the inside of the church ( I got there too early - the church opens at 10 ).

One of the Mission on the Mission trail. You can take a bike tour from San Antonio. Very interesting place. Nice for kids to learn history fast

My favorite of the San Antonio missions. Beautiful Moorish designed door. Easy parking right up to the door of the church. Regular masses scheduled. I recommend vespers or evening mass. It is beautiful and...as it is so small...on the off chance that it is too crowded (which it usually isn't) they have speakers outside and you can participate in mass on the park benches across the mini plaza (more like a porch) in front of the church. It's beautiful to hear the mass as the sun is setting and the cicadas are singing.

Beautiful location. Nice grounds and is very quiet. The church can be visited and is beautiful too. You can enjoy a nice walk in the fields. Parking is ample. Here begins the mission trail, and can be visited by bike.

Great place to visit, go to church, learn, and share with family. We started our bicycle your of all the San Antonio missions here and rode up to the Alamo. While I cycle frequently my family does not. You should be a bit active to be able to make the whole journey, but it's not too bad if you stop and hang out along the way. We brought snacks and went in late spring. Oh and did I forget to mention sun block?

Beautifully maintained buildings and grounds. Make sure you go into the church if mass is not being held. This church is open all the time. It's a smaller church than the rest of the missions, but it is breathtaking inside - don't forget how old these missions are. It's really incredible that they are still standing and more importantly still a working church with regular mass schedules.

Ancient church mission. Interesting. Be careful. Texas is hot:-)

This was good to walk around. Not a whole lot of literature of the place. Connects to the riverwalk. Minimal shade and bathrooms. Great hour or excursion.

Mission Espada is probably the quaintest of the missions along the Mission Trail. It is also furthest south of the five missions. The church is photogenic inside and out and grounds are well maintained. Make sure to visit the Espada Acequia (Piedras Creek Aqueduct) along the way.
