San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a National Historical Park and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving four of the five Spanish frontier missions in San Antonio, Texas, USA. These outposts were established by Catholic religious orders to spread Christianity among the local natives. These missions formed part of a colonization system that stretched across the Spanish Southwest in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
In geographic order from north (upstream of the San Antonio River) to south (downstream) the missions are Mission Concepción, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. The Espada Aqueduct, also part of the Park, is due east of Mission San Juan, across the river.

WOW WOW WOW!!! This place was absolutely stunning to me! I wasn't sure what exactly I was going into when I saw it on Google and decided to check it out, but my husband and I were pleasantly surprised! The beauty is breathtaking as is the History. The best part is how open it all is, you can walk in basically everywhere! Very nice!

This place is beautiful. I'm a sucker for history so this was right up my alley. We went on a Sunday morning during mass and walked the grounds, and visited the church. If you happen to be there during mass be sure not to block the door, it's very easy to do with a family of four. We were scolded by some of the local church goers, and very rudely asked to move or sit... so... On that note just keep the lane clear and keep.walking If you plan on walking through and not sitting for mass... but even with that this place gets five stars just for hits splendid beauty and history. A must see!!

Nice look into history. It was well kept despite the government shut down. Several places to stop and consider the past. Would be a good place for a picnic too. It is still an active Catholic church with weekly services. It's easy to get to and park. Not sure how parking is if crowded.

The Missions are a great place to go to just wander and enjoy some historical sights. You can if you are adventurous walk all the way between them and if not, take the easy drive. Each has parking which is free. I do suggest doing some of the walk as it takes you through some interesting areas.

The national park in San Antonio includes 4 missions. You can start the mission trail with Alamo. Which is a state park in downtown and rent a bike and visit all of them in one day. They have a little museum in their visitor center. Very helpful staff, the sites are clean and well managed. There are a lot of signs around and directions what to see and where to go.

Wonderful way to spend your time in San Antonio - outside the city. The missions are in far better shape than the last time I visited, 40 years ago. They are infinately more accessible, with a city bus line passing all but the very last one in the chain. The southernmost mission can be reached by a gentle one mile walk along the San Antonio River from the last bus stop. It is an excellent way to look back across almost 400 years of European history in North America. The park itself is a cooperative effort between San Antonio, the State of Texas, the Catholic Church, the National Park Service, and, through the designation as a World Heritage Site, the United Nations. It is a worthy effort.

Today I visited a very old mission church. It was incredible. It felt like walking into the past. Its Hidden inside the trails or Mission Trails. If you get a chance to go to all the Mission Trail churches; that would probably take you all day. If you are a history buff or just interested in historical missions, this would be fun for you. As for me, it was great. I recommend that you go and visit the missions. Take plenty of water, snacks and something for shade Plus some kind of chairs to sit.ok, good luck, 😁👍

Mission San Jose was awesome and the visitor center explaining the context behind the mission compounds was also a real treat. My curiosity was piqued when visiting the compound, and I might have liked a bit more in the way of displays in the visitor center. Still, we could have stayed longer to go on a ranger-guided tour, which always seem to fill in the gaps, and of course answer any questions. This is a great place and a must stop while in San Antonio. Unfortunately, the open road (and schedule) was calling us to continue on to Big Bend National Park later in the day. Still, part of a morning spent here was a blast.

Great place to go visit and witness the history of the missions of San Antonio. Don't forget to take pictures of your kids and family since the scenery is beautiful. Also recommend going to church on Sunday inside the mission it is a great experience, especially since they have a Mariachi band that plays all the music. Makes you feel like you are back in time during a simple time.

Really great tour guide- you won’t get much out of it by just walking through on your own. They've got some really great guides. More fun than other events we've attended. There's bikes on site you can rent to tour around. Go to the little store by the church. They've got some great treasures there. Great religious gifts and other treasures.

Moved me to tears. Out of everything we saw this is an absolute. The grounds are outstanding. Just lovely. If you're in San Antonio don't miss this spot to reflect. San Jose Mission. 5 star

We started at one of the missions and rented the public bikes. We rode a total of 14 miles that day and visited 5 missions all in all. WONDERFUL TRIP!! It made the adventure outdoorsy while visiting historical sites. Each of the missions has a gift shop. It costs $12 to rent the bike for the day and you must dock it within each hour to check out another one. I suggest downloading the app before starting. If not, no big deal. It just makes it easier to check how many bikes are at each station, since the station we started at only had two working bikes, so two of us had to walk to the next station. San Antonio knows what its doing with their parks' trails system. Wonderful experience. 10/10 recommend!

I love to take historical trips so naturally the San Antonio missions are a favorite destination. The architecture is incredible, creative, practical, beautiful, and simplicity itself all at the same time. I recommend going in the summer. Yes, it's hotter, but everything is in bloom so the landscape is spectacular and you get a better feel for how the pioneers stayed cool... San Jaun in particularly is gorgeous in summer with the courtyard covered in wildflowers. There are public facilities and they are all pet friendly and wheelchair accessible.

We visited the restored San Jose mission. The grounds and chapel were beautiful. The major restoration, which began in the 1930s, preserved this amazing mission complex. The placards and posters do a great job of helping you envision the activity of this mission which dates back almost 300 years. I felt very peaceful here. Visitors were very respectful.

Very well put together. I enjoyed my time there thoroughly. Add nice informative videos outside well-ventilated structures to go into throughout the entire walkway so if you did get too hot you're always close to somewhere. And the church itself is gorgeous.

A must. This is where modern San Antonio was born. They were the supply chain. Also they were built with labor for food/lodging and spiritual growth by the native population. We admire, reflect on the hardships and decide how we go on - as a civilization. Enjoy a Sunday mass, respect these monuments of history and explore San Antonio. On your own or takeva tour. Gray Line Tours p.m. Grand Historic takes you there.

So much more special and beautiful than the Alamo, to me. I’m not a religious person, but it feels so sacred here. Quiet, beautiful- it feels like a step back in time. A much truer experience of the historical significance of the Mission system.

The 4 active missions within the National Historic Park are very much worth visiting. Very informative, very beautiful, very touching emotionally. There are public buses that go to the missions, but we went by car. The missions are about 2 miles apart, so an automobile, bus, or bike are your best modes of getting from one to the next. Too far apart to just walk for most of us. Admission is free to all of the missions. Very highly recommend visiting these lovely sites when in San Antonio Tx!

Absolutely amazing place to visit. The old mission still hold their beauty. Walking through brings some serenity and calm. We spent about an hour or two just walking through. Would definitely go again

Typical tourist destination. The historical significance is the only reason I would give it 5 stars. The events of the Battle for Texas, is the stuff legends are made of. It was a nice visit and has been restored well.
