The San Mateo County History Museum is located in downtown Redwood City, California. Housed inside the former San Mateo County Courthouse built in 1910, the museum showcases the rich history of San Mateo County and the surrounding area. Operations and funding for the museum are by the San Mateo County Historical Association (SMCHA). The current location of this museum opened on February 6, 1999, however from 1963 until 1998 the museum was located at the College of San Mateo. The building is a product of the City Beautiful Movement (1893-1920) and has a stained-glass dome thought to be the largest of its kind on the West Coast.
Two other museums are operated by the SMCHA including the Woodside Store and the Sánchez Adobe Park.
This is a beautiful historic building. The stained glass dome and ceiling in the court room are worth stopping in to see.

Check out the Mavericks surfing exhibit. Also, the section on western-US suburban growth is illustrated with great artifacts and displays.

Worth a visit whenever you go, didn't expect to find TB12's county hall of fame plaque for high school, or Jim Harbaughs either. There is a lot here. Redwood City has more history than i thought and the county has a checkered past, who knew? I enjoyed the old school surfing simulator too. Happens to be free the first Friday of the month.

Surprisingly full of amazing, interesting things. Stagecoaches, model ships, World War II posters. Content is well balanced to have things to interest both adults and children. They also do a good job of showing both content of national interest and showing how it connects to San Mateo county in particular. We were expecting a small, one hour collection but this place has loads to see. Highly recommended.

Wow, I had no idea what was in here until I went on a school field trip with my kids! There is a ton to explore in here and learn about what life was like in this area in the past. The staff was very friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. I can’t wait to take them back and explore all the areas we did not get to in the school tour.
