Really interesting. Spent several hours here. We took breaks in the central garden to warm up from the very cool museum. We appreciated the exceptionally unbiased history lesson. Text in some areas were redundant. Water to drink would be appreciated. The entrance through the butterfly garden is a brilliant solution to historical site restrictions. Well done Costa Rica!

Very interesting. For us USA gringos it shows how much damage we can do to a country. Great exhibits, marvelous views and a really neat butterfly arium.

We were very pleased with our visit to the museum. Neither of us knew much about Costa Rica before we arrived, so touring the museum was very enlightening, particularly because we arrived the weekend of elections. It was quite fascinating learning about their recent history and still seeing the impact of the living memory on the culture. The pre-columbus parts of the museum were fascinating too. I particularly was interested in the section on the native burial rituals. All told, we spent about 3 to 4 hours here, and people complaining about the price need to go visit a museum in the states, then decide if $9 is expensive for half a day of entertainment.

It was informative but was able to go through all the exhibits in less than 2 hours. Was hoping for more of an interactive experience.

Great way to learn the rich history of Costa Rica in a beautiful historic setting. The amazing butterflies alone are a reason to go. Enjoy!

This was in a beautiful building and contained a lot of interesting exhibits. The main entrance is closed, so go in the smaller side entrance by the glass convex exhibit. The butterfly garden was the highlight of the museum with hundreds of living butterflies and caterpillars in a large sunny enclosed area. They have fruit stands where butterflies feed so it's easy to get pictures of blue morphos and owl butterflies. The rest of the museum had exhibits on the history of costa Rica from precolonial to modern times and more. Exhibits were in Spanish and English. Definitely worth a stop by!

Interesting museum. But not really worth it if your not really interested in these things. Because of the much higher tourist fee I wouldn't recommend this. I would say go out with someone local to see the real deal insted, and for a much lower price tag.

The Museums it's awesome. It displays many of the things that has created our tico identity.

Always a great museum... However it smells like sewer water in certain areas. Fascinating to see so much gold in one place!

This is one of the best museums in Costa Rica. By many years it was a poor planed museum, but in the last decade a new focus in his administration gave it a new life. The south west area, originally the shooting and practice field was a open air theater, today it host the butterfly hatchery. The south east corner is the old soldier barracks and cells. In the top of this old military fort you’ll find exhibitions from the pre colonial era to the present and our place as a nation. In the east side you’re going to see a restored military officer’s family house; this place host temporary exhibitions. You can find a great view of the city from the west balcony. Enjoy!!!

The building used to be a fortress in the colonial time. The tour starts with a beautiful garden and a butterfly farm where you can see them from up close. Then, the exhibits from the colonial times, moving up to Costa Rica's contemporary history. There is also an area where you can walk in the cells of prison. You can see some of the famous and mysterious stone balls too. Really worth your time and money since entrance is inexpensive.

Went on international museum day, entrance was free. You enter through the butterfly sanctuary. This was the an exciting welcoming to the Costa Rica and their dedication to Peace and the environment. Ended in the Coco Island exhibit, which confirmed our impression of this lovely country. Thank you Costa Rica for your dedication to Peace, and protection of the environment.

It is a small museum (it takes about 2 hours to visit it) but you learn tons about the history of Costa Rica and its culture! There is also a butterfly reserve where you can get amazing close ups. I highly recommend to visit it if you're interested in learning about the country... not just going to the beautiful beaches.

The exhibits are so well done and beautiful, and the history covers so much. There is a beautiful butterfly garden and set hall as well. One of most well done and informative national history museums I've been to

My favorite part is the fact that they start with butterflies, that is beautiful! The museum is nice, good combination of modern art and history. It would be great if they had clearer signs about the exhibit rooms correct order in order to get a better understanding of the historical part.

I really enjoyed the butterfly garden. Also there is a good collection of pre-Columbian pottery from Costa Rica, which is delightful. The interior courtyard of the museum is gorgeous. We visited the museum early in our trip, and I liked having an historical overview from the beginning. The museum does a good job of that, and it's not huge or overwhelming.
