The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum (Spanish: Museo del Oro Precolombino) is a museum in San José, Costa Rica. It is located in a subterranean building underneath the Plaza de la cultura and is managed by the Banco Central de Costa Rica. The museum has a substantial collection of over 1600 artifacts of Pre-Columbian gold dating back to AD 500.The collection includes Costa Rica's first coin, the Media Escudo which was minted in 1825, animal (notably frog) figurines, amulets, earrings, erotic statuettes and El Guerrero, a life sized gold warrior figure adorned with gold ornaments in a glass case. In Costa Rican history, gold was considered a symbol of authority and the items are testament to the craftmanship of the Pre-Columbian period. There is also a replica of a pre-Columbian grave containing 88 gold objects which was unearthed on a banana plantation in southeastern Costa Rica in the 1950s.

A must do if you are in San Jose. Walk around, visit the theater and especially the gold museum because it is the best thing to do in San Jose. Have lunch at one of the many restaurants. This is an area you can spend a day at. Enjoy.
Fascinating cultural and political history. Only complaint is that not all exhibit text is in English. This is a minor complaint because I don't believe they are obligated to do that, but the guy selling us tickets did tell us all the exhibits are bilingual. Still working on my spanish so it was kind of nice to be forced to use it.
We take the kids and they enjoy chasing the pigeons and watcing the computerized lighted fountains. Its located in the heart of downtown San Jose
Quintessential Central American urban space... Lots of activity. Don't miss the National Theatre or the Museo De Oro!
Pleasant clean plaza. Surrounded with shops. Contains museum entrance and National Theatre.
Nice place with different food options but, in my opinion it lacks more restaurants. The service is really good and the price is not the lowest.
Good hang out zone for the locals. Right in the middle of everything. Nice and big square.
Great place for anyone looking for items usually only found in tourist locations
Public park next to National Theater. Nice place to seat for a while and spend few minutes in the middle of the concrete jungle. Have a nice talk with someone or just watch all people walking in central avenue.
Ok for cultural center entertaining events take place there sometimes
