Bonaventure Cemetery is a rural cemetery located on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah, Georgia. The cemetery became famous when it was featured in the 1994 novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt, and in the subsequent movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, based on the book. It is the largest of the city's municipal cemeteries, containing nearly 160 acres (0.65 km2).
The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road. Immediately inside the gates is the large and ornate Gaston Tomb.

A very extensive and historical Cemetery. There is much to explore here with many ornate gravestones and multiple paths to walk. The end of the cemetery is near the Wilmington River and you can get a good view as well as a nice breeze on a hot day. You're able to drive through most of the cemetery, although you'll see more in detail If you experience it on foot.

Gorgeous cemetery loaded with history. This is a must see in Savannah. There is no place in Savannah more peaceful to me than this with its serene landscape despite it being a cemetery. Well maintained. We just went for a walk through with our son, who fell asleep in his stroller thanks to the peace and quiet, and took everything in.

If you love history and architecture this is a place to visit! They have guided tours but we opted to download the iPhone app tour and purchase a map of the cemetery upon arrival. You most definitely need the map! If you don't have a map you will be lost within the first 10 minutes. Arrive early as it takes awhile to see everything and the gates close promptly at 5pm. Security will drive around and chase you out. You can drive your car around and park at different locations but you will have to get out and walk to most of the sites that are on the tour. I'm so glad I didn't miss this! It was worth spending a half day to commune with the dead.

I'm not one to frequent cemeteries, in fact, I usually stay out of them. I almost considered skipping this spot as we were getting ready to leave Savannah, but I'm glad we came since I don't know when I will get back to this charming city. First of all, you won't be the only tourist there! There were TONS! You can even do a group tour of this burial ground, if we had more time that would have been something interesting as I caught snippets of what the tour guides were saying. I'd describe this historical cemetery as eerie, but beautiful. You do have the Spanish Moss hanging down throughout the cemetery, plus tons of beautiful pink and purple flowers throughout. Some of the tombstones are quite elaborate works of art. I'd budget spending 20-60 minutes on here, it all depends on how much you feel like walking.
