Hill Top is a 17th-century house in Near Sawrey near Hawkshead, in the English county of Cumbria. It is an example of Lakeland vernacular architecture with random stone walls and slate roof. The house was once the home of children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter who left it to the National Trust. It is a Grade II* listed building. It is open to the public as a writer's house museum, shown as Beatrix Potter herself would have known it.
The Hill Top garden is of interest, being maintained in a style in keeping with Potter's illustrations.
Really don't know where to begin. The house and contents is exactly as she left it. Almost like she went out shopping and shut the door. Fabulous. I can't wait to back another time. Very worthwhile to visit. I wish I could live in it

This is a must-see for any fan of Beatrix Potter. After visiting, I can understand why she loved it enough to defy her parents. The house is charming, furnished just as though Ms. Potter had just stepped out into the garden. And the garden is lovely, too, with views of sheep in their fields. The entire Lake District is beautiful - no wonder it's been a preferred holiday spot for many years!

Beatrix potters beautiful cottage, full of period character in a fantastic village setting. You can't help but understand why she fell in love with this house and the lake district life. It's not a big property and entrance is by timed ticket from the ticket office. It is usually busy but patience is the key and its worth a wait. The car park is small and spaces narrow but the trust staff do a great job helping but you may have a wait to park. The thing is there is a good flow of visitors. The hotel next to the car park serves lovely cream teas in a beautiful conservatory to the rear with breath taking views over the valley. Do the visit but expect to wait a little and be patient...its well worth it

A mist for any Beatrix Potter fan. You can find great insights here into her private, creative and publishing career here. Even in winter you can imagine Jemima Puddle duck in the garden. Definitely recommend!

Very interesting place. Well worth a visit and a great insight into the history of Beatrix Potter. Quite small and a little cramped but that's not really a downside, it's just the way it is. The only downside is there are not really enough guides there to give full attention to everyone, but again, as they're volunteers then you cannot really expect more. Just being totally honest with the review and feedback. Very much worth a visit.

Excellent national trust property. It was very exciting to walk through the house where Beatrix spent some of her life. The volunteers were very knowledgeable and helpful. He garden was lovely even in early March. Great village pub nearby too so that was handy.

The reviews about the car parks are not very fair, the place was built a long time before all of us wanted to visit! And the regulations say they cant have too many car parks dotted around....WALK!!! Loved the place!!!! Helpful and friendly staff!!!

Didn't know this was here until we had a look in the Handbook. Fantastically friendly staff who, despite being on the overflowing car park at the end of a hot, busy day, were ready to chat about the area and give friendly, useful advice. The house itself was well set out, with just the right amount of history to keep us interested while wandering. The gardens were lovely to stroll around, and we were kept busy doing the kids treasure hunts (despite being 25)! A beautiful place in the world, definitely deserving of its fame.

Just loved this house. The fire burning in the grate with smell of wood smoke made it so welcoming, expected Beatrix Potter to appear at any moment. Loved the books in the relevant rooms from where she had drawn pictures to go along with her tales. Long may the trust continue to share this piece of history.

Amazing! Very interesting to see how she lived and where she got her inspiration for her stories from. The house is a lot better than it looks. I've always loved Beatrix Potter =)

Really lovely village. Beatrix potters house is charming and the surrounding walks lovely. Be warned....limited parking and the house is on a ticket system. In gets a bit busy, but it's worth the trip. Staff were really friendly and helpful

I didn't grow up on Peter Rabbit and co. so I probably didn't enjoy this as much as those who did. The site also suffers from being in a small village with limited space. The gardens are a delight in spring and as we were blessed by a fine warm and sunny day even the lack of Peter Rabbit knowledge meant I enjoyed our visit.
Michael LightfootMay 24, 2018
Lovely cottage and garden and the staff are friendly and guide was knowledgeable. Not an easy place to park but we parked and walked from the village hall in Far Sawrey. (£2) For me there could have been more about Beatrix Potter and her life written down. It's nice to read in your own time and take in the atmosphere. I found the signage next to exhibits (not much of that really) small and not always easy to read. However it was a pleasant morning.

Nice area, there is a beautiful little bed and breakfast nearby called Belle Green B&B. It's a family run spot and they do teas and coffees throughout the day. Perfect if you're thinking of getting out of the way and want to explore the proper side of the lake District. Also Belle Green is dog friendly

Loved this place. You almost expected to see Beatrix Potter walk round the corner. Wonderful and unspoilt. Parking not great get there when it opens and you'll get a parking place and you'll get in. You can't get tickets on line. First come first served and the numbers they can let in are limited.

Lovely little house. I would definitely advice getting there early in the day though as there is limited room in the house and entry is on a first come first served basis. Nice gardens and the surrounding village is delightful as well. There are several sights that can be seen in Beatrix Potters drawings. Parking is limited, again another good reason to go as early at you can.

I am a member of the National Trust and was looking forward to seeing this. First, the car park was only a capacity was 30 then the overflow car park was nearly a mile away downhill. I can't walk very far due to knee problems but the lady in the car park was so super helpful and offered for my husband to drop me off at the gate and then a put a cone in a parking space when a new space becomes free. Secondly, this museum isn't really for children. This is for adults who still have a love for the Beatrix Potter books who have not grown up. The museum is super lovely and the fact all the furniture is original makes the house. They only let in 5-6 people every 5 minutes due to the size of the house. This is only a hour or 1 1/2 hour activity. They did have a trail for the kids in the garden, but it's the size of my garden and it was over in 10 minutes. Glad I have done it, but possibly not to take young children.

A lovely quaint house and garden. We arrived 45 minutes early as parking is extremely limited and many others arrived at the same time. The house itself is a short walk from the ticket office past other quaint buildings. The entrance is on a timed ticket as it would get crowded very quickly but we were amongst the first in. The National trust shop sells lots of Peter Rabbit items. Usual National trust prices.
Karyn BallardAug 5, 2018
It's a very small NT property so you can only spend a couple of hours there at the most. The garden is very busy whilst people wait for their time slot to get in the house. The house is good and interesting, the NT guides in the rooms were knowledgeable about Beatrix Potter and helped to fill out certain aspects of what we were viewing. Careful when using the Postcode from the NT App in Google maps the directions take you past the entrance of the car park to the entrance of the property and the drop off point outside. You have to go to the car park first to get your ticket to enter the property.
Matt VitlerAug 17, 2018
Great if you love Beatrix Potter. The house is pretty much as she left it. Bit expensive to visit if your not a national trust member, but worth the visit. Great gift shop. Not easy to park nearby in busy seasons so get a tour or get there early.
