Bongeunsa (Korean: 봉은사; Hanja: 奉恩寺) is a Buddhist temple located in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu in Seoul, South Korea. It was founded in 794 during the reign of King Wonseong by the monk Yeon-hoe (Korean: 연희), then the highest ranking monk of Silla, and originally named Gyeonseongsa (Korean: 견성사; Hanja: 見性寺). It is located on the slope of Sudo Mountain, across the street from the COEX Mall.
Bongeunsa Temple complex is a very special place for me and somehow whenever I am in Seoul, I find myself visiting his place. It is a beautiful temple complex, just outside the noise, hustle, and bustle of Gangnam. It is such a peaceful and tranquil place that one might almost forget that they are in the middle of one of the busiest metropolises in Asia. It is a great place to relax and learn about Korea's past. If you are in Seoul, definitely consider visiting the Bongeunsa Temple complex!
I love this place and it holds many memories for me. When I was working in the Samsung area I would come here often to escape the crazy city. It is calm and clear when I'm there. The noises melt away a bit. My friend went here to eat vegetarian meals (which are hard to find in Korea), and I came here to mediate and walk around like an old man. I'd often sit BEHIND the statue and watch the people come and pray. It sounds weird but I loved making up stories for everyone as they passed haha. Now that I actually am an older man (before I was 22), I came back with a filming crew to show them this amazing spot and the crazy juxtaposition of the city and the temple. They loved it too. It's a great spot if you're in Seoul, especially if you don't have time to get out of the city and you want to see a temple. Easy access from the subway line 2, or line 9.
One of the best buddha temple in seoul. The buddha statue here is very nice to see. The temple is very big. Some times they decorate the temple with colourful lotus followers. That view is feast for eyes. They are many towers around the temple. The view is very nice to see.
Amazing Buddhist temple in the heart of Seoul, where one can learn more about Korean religion. This place is surrounded by modern buildings, but the experience of looking at the contrast of a modern city with still traditional places, is very pleasant and impressive at the same time. It's free. The statue of Buddha is simply majestic. It is worth visiting!!
Near my house. You can inspire Buddhism. You make comfortable mind.
What a peaceful place! It is such a bless to have a nice temple in the middle of city. Usually , typical temple of Korea is located in top of mountain . So Bongeunsa is very special because you can surrouned by high buildings but also feel the peaceful atmosphere of temple. It is good place to relax . It’s free to look around, but i recommend to put at least 1000won into donation box and bow and pray.
Light festival at Bongeunsa to celebrate Buddha's birthday was so nice!! I stronly recommend to go if you would like to experience buddhis culture and lightings.
A beautiful temple full of beautiful people, and a very welcome place of peace in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Seoul. The guide at the gate rushed out to give us an English map and his recommendations with a lot of humor and soul. Once you've looked around the temple complex, don't miss out on a relaxing and delicious tea ceremony with Korean rice sweets 🍵🍡
I am local. Sometimes I take a walk here. Although I am not Buddhism, but I feel comfortable in this temple. If you are a foreign traveler, I recommend you to visit Bongeunsa after visiting coex.
Beautiful set of temples located at different elevations. The souvenir shop also has some good articles at a reasonable price.
Beautiful place. Wish i could visit more. 阿弥陀佛
