Namdaemun (Korean: 남대문; Hanja: 南大門, lit. 'South Great Gate'), officially known as the Sungnyemun (Korean: 숭례문; Hanja: 崇禮門, lit. 'Honoring Propriety Gate'), is one of the Eight Gates in the Fortress Wall of Seoul, South Korea, which surrounded the city in the Joseon dynasty. It is located in Jung-gu between Seoul Station and Seoul Plaza, with the historic 24-hour Namdaemun Market next to the gate.
The gate, dating back to the 14th century, is a historic pagoda-style gateway, and is designated as the first National Treasure of South Korea. It was once one of the three major gateways through Seoul's city walls which had a stone circuit of 18.2 kilometres (11.3 mi) and stood up to 6.1 metres (20 ft) high. It was first built in the last year of King Taejo of Joseon's reign in 1398, and rebuilt in 1447.

It is the gate that is standing around here surrounded by the modern building which gives you a contrasting view. Best is if you time to take a walk on the inner trail of the Seoul wall and you get a better view and understanding of the extensiveness of their structure.

There's a giant gate with soldiers in traditional gear all around. Great photo ops and also walking distance from Namdaemun Market.

Combining this with the historical Society wall and the other gates can give you an opportunity to experience a large portion of the city. This will require a lot of walking and climbing. This beautiful site is a wonderful stop in the middle of the bustling city. Consider climbing up to Seoul tower before or after visiting.

Namdaemun market has everything for the tourists. I liked the street food here. So much of variety is present in the market. You can do shopping for clothes, bags, chocolates, toys and many more things, actually most of the things. But price are bit on high side, even you can bargain upto 40% at times. Tourist information staff can be found in the area to help tourists.

Bus passed here and it looked like a really interesting place to go. It's located on the Western entrance of the Namdaemun Market. The gate looked really nice.
