I attended for work purposes, lovely museum and little cafe, if you are interested in Sheffield's steel history it's a fantastic place to see some of the industry's heritage, equipment and produce. Fantastic for school trips and a family day out. The parking is free and when you drive onto the site it's like stepping back in time from the cobble street to the Bessimer converter at the entrance.
Fantastic place to visit in Sheffield. Give yourself a few hours as there's a lot to see. A couple times a day the huge steam engine gets powered up and is very impressive. Also the museum has a some very skilled artisans that make small steel products. Museum don't have their own car park but street parking wasn't too much of a problem when I went. Pubs and eating places near by.
Very nice museum all about Sheffield's steel industry.Se really nice exhibits. The river don engine is awesome to see running, britains most powerful steam engine. On site parking is free and very reasonable price to enter museum.Give yourself 2-2.5 he's to see everything.Highly recommended👍
£6 adult (May 2018). Parking nearby. Great collection of tools and heavy machinery. Don't miss the steam engine, it is activated a few times a day and is a blast. Otherwise good enough, especially if you're interested in this stuff. Kids may be bored quickly however as this museum is not very interactive and is of primary interest for adults.
Very good value for money considering the size of the museum. Plenty to see and the working steam engine is a marvel to see. The setting for the museum itself is good too based in a square of sorts with cobbled streets and is a nice trip out for anyone around Sheffield with a bit of time to spare. Plenty of pubs nearby serving real ale including kelham island beers (the brewery and shop are opposite the museum). You can't help but absorb the atmosphere of this architecturally beautiful square.
Fascinating museum. The big steam engine is really impressive. Loads of info and exhibits that bring the industrial history to life.
Plenty to see, very Sheffield. Live steam engine reversing is impressive. Transport section has locally made cars that are worth a look. Bacon and sausage barm was very good too!
Could have spent more time here. Great displays and interactive exhibits. Such an interesting story with something for everyone!
Great day out for all the family. Lots of interesting things to see and experience. If you want to read a lot of the boards then arrive early, there's a lot of them. We were lucky enough to have visited on a day where the last Little Mester (possibly), was working. He was in the process of making a knife handle I believe, amazing to see a man of almost 92 years of age working at such high level of skill. I would suggest at least 3 hours should be allowed for a good look round and would recommend arriving in time to see the River Don steam engine demonstration. It doesn't last too long but was good to see how it worked before it retired. There is a cafe which we didn't visit, toilets on site and a small gift shop area with reasonable prices. There is plenty of seating around the museum which is ideal for those who struggle to stand for long periods of time and lifts for wheelchairs and prams are available to the higher levels.
A wonderful day out excellent value. A must see is the river Don engine working. Staff very helpful and friendly.
Awesome interactive museum. With actual showing of working steam engine. great for everyone!
Kelham Island Museum was such an eye opener for my family, a place less visited but so touching. To see the part played by the people of Sheffield including men, WOMEN & CHILDREN. The role they played in the steel industry & the world war. The skimpy food they used to get while working in the factories, and how we the present generation is reaping their benefits. Thank you all the people of Sheffield for your great great grandparents hard work, sacrifice and building up the country .
Its a very interesting place to visit. There is a lot to see plus a cafe where you can get snacks. A great place
We visit this museum very often! My kids love it, specially playing in the "MELTING SHOP". They always learn something new. Super friendly staff too. Love it!
A real character pub with an absolute brilliant selection of ales and food. The place itself is a cosy pub the staff are very helpful and will give advice on what is what when it comes to what is on offer. Only a short walk from the city centre and worth going.
We got married at a Kelham Island Museum on 5/8/17. We knew we wanted to get married at the museum from the moment we laid eyes on it. It is such a unique and beautiful building, there was no doubt that this was the wedding venue for us. Previous venues have told us “this is what you have to do on your day, this is how we do it.” Where as all the staff at the museum told us “we will do whatever you want for your day!” Everyone that we dealt with during the planning and the day were so kind, helpful and flexible. Choosing to get married at the museum was defiantly the best choice we made regarding our wedding! If you are looking for an unique, flexible and amazing venue for your wedding, please visit them! You will not be disappointed.
