The Old Bazaar (Macedonian: Стара чаршија, romanized: Stara čaršija; Albanian: Çarshia e Vjetër; Turkish: Eski Çarşı or Üsküp Türk Çarşısı) is a bazaar located in Skopje, North Macedonia, situated on the eastern bank of the Vardar River, stretching from the Stone Bridge to the Bit-Pazar and from the Skopje Fortress to the Serava river. The Old Bazaar falls primarily within the borders of Čair Municipality but a part of it is located in Centar Municipality. As one of the oldest and largest marketplaces in the Balkans, it has been Skopje's centre for trade and commerce since at least the 12th century.
The earliest known sources that describe the existence of a merchant quarter on the bazaar's territory date back to the 12th century. During Ottoman rule of Skopje, the Old Bazaar developed rapidly to become city's main centre of commerce. The Ottoman history of the bazaar is evidenced by roughly thirty mosques, numerous caravanserais and hans, among other buildings and monuments. The bazaar was heavily damaged by the earthquake in 1555, the burning of the city in 1689, the earthquake in 1963, as well as during the First and the Second World Wars and faced various rebuildings following these events.

Very nice place in old part of city. There are a lot of traditional restaurants and shops. You can find many delicious pastries from the old days. This place is in walking distance to center and most of attractions. I recommend this place to feel old Macedonian spirit and traditions.

Very nice, big, very old-Turkish. Could be a bit cleaner! Have a lot of shops with dubious quality of goods, but it is impossible to miss it when visiting Skopje. Nice restaurants, a lot of fast food joints, serving local specialities. National Art Gallery located in an old Turkish bath is a must! Do not worry, it is open around clock in spite what google writes here, be happy!

It is one of the historic bazaars built in the Ottoman time. Interesting place to be, with several historic buildings. Feeling the old vibrations of the city.

Nice part of the town with many small shops and restaurants. Here you can try local and oriental dishes and a bit further to the north is a Bitpazar - market with vegetables and all other kinds of stuff from shoes to electronics. Here are also some old remains of mosques and baths.

Interesting place with a lot of historical values. Always crouded place and with a lot of positive energy. Lots of restaurants with traditional, delicious and very cheap food.

The vivid memory of many centuries, this place gives you a good idea of the size, functions and architecture of beautiful old Balkan towns. Even if the genuine local Macedonian touch is barely visible now in the old market, under the strong Turkish influence, you have a chance to see the fine blend of ethnics, religions and peaceful vicinity now.... A lot of small souvenir shops (don't forget to bargain), coffee shops, sweets. I liked the unexpected, impressive changes in the new city center nearby, too.

A quaint market place with shops selling souvenir, fresh kebabs at the many eateries dotting the area and if you get lucky, folk dancers performing at square...

Hope this place will leave it alone from the monuments as it is great as it is.

Great place in Skopje. If you wants to try local food and drinks you should definitely come here. On top of the hill is great beer house.

Unique religious, cultural and artistic mix you won't find anywhere else! Do not think about this bazaar as just a market. Every corner here, tells its own story. The Old Bazaar is a cultural and artistic center in which a number of cultural and historic monuments are located. Most of the buildings that once were used to host the travelers or as hammams, were transformed into museums and galleries, which today are used with the main purpose to host art exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events. The area is also home to several mosques, churches and a clock tower. The authenticity of the Old Bazaar can be experienced through food but also a lively nightlife during weekends.

Nice place, but reeks of tourism. Aside from old buildings not so much old style to it. I would recommend hitting up one of the modern shopping malls and food courts to get a feel how locals shop and live.

Place where it takes you back in time. Place like nowhere else. Rustic, full with craftsman, bars with crafted bear and wine. Place with memories. One of the places that must be visited if you are in Skopje.

Great old town area. A bit small but fun. Check out the church for a great surprise.

History, religion, food, culture, atmosphere... the list goes on. It was my first time here... although it does have that authentic feel, touristic amenities seems to be coming in fast. Nice to visit and wonder around. Every corner is differen. For shopping I think there are better places unless you are looking for that particular souvenir to take back home which will keep reminding you of Skopje.

Fantastic and historic old bazaar featuring food, drink, jewellery, clothing, souvenirs, and basically everything under the sun. Churches, mosques, below the street hookah parlours......I could go on and on. This is a definite must see when in Skopje. I'm staying in the relatively inexpensive but beautiful Hotel De KOKA adjacent to the old market place. I recommend it.
